Some Chronograph readings for Model 60-15
Hello,
I just purchased my first S&W revolver, a Model 60-15, and my first chronograph, ProChrono DLX. For those who are interested in chrono results please see my attached table. Some rounds have been tested twice and you will see that by the air temperature being different as well as velocities.
I was pleased by the Buffalo Bore round but I expected more from the Underwood cartridge. This is a good example of why one should test their own gun with the ammo they intend to use.
I wanted to insert the table directly into the thread space but I couldn't get it to look right. If anyone has any tips for inserting spreadsheet data I would greatly appreciate it.
Thank you and take care.

Thanks for that. The remington 158 SWCHP are moving pretty well for 158 grain. They weren't that far behind the gold dot 135's........ Plus P's. Maybe that HTP is plus p also, eh? Or no?
We need a pic of your 60. I like them a lot. Wouldn't mind one myself. I like how the barrel is just a bit longer on the newer ones too. I'm assuming you have the 2.125" barrel....

Thanks for sharing. I use the BB 158 SWCHP +P but have not crono'ed. They are listed at 1,000 FPS from a 1 7/8" J Frame which is impressive.

Welcome to the Forum
I am also curious about which model 60 you are using.
Is is the standard 3" Model 60 Chief's Special Target or is the Model 60 Pro Chief's Special Target.
You might want to output your table as a .JPG then it would be visible in the thumbnail like you posted above or you could simply point to the image from wherever your image is stored

ike1518,
I don't want to burst your bubble, but cartridge performance is not affected at all by ambient air temperature at the time of testing, but rather the temperature of the ammunition at the moment of firing. Recording Outside Air Temperature (OAT) is really futile.

Alk8944,
I agree. I put the ammo out on the bench for about five minutes to come closer to ambient but that may or may not have been enough time.
I care about cold weather performance of ammunition because I live in a cold climate area (North Dakota).
Take care, peace.

Here is a picture of my Model 60-15 3" barrel revolver. I don't know about Chiefs or Specials or anything like that, this is my first S&W revolver and that is all I know right now. I bought it because it fits my hand and suits me like it was custom made for me.

Colt_saa,
How did you do that? I know how to output it as a PDF but I don't know how to output as a JPG.
Need to do some digging I guess.
Thank you for help and suggestion.

Curious to see what you get if you ever chrono .357 other than the Falcon reloads.

1sailor,
I do like the Hi-tek coated cast Bullets. I just ordered some from ACME and will try their bullets without the lube groove.
I may try some jacketed bullets just for fun but I only intend to carry factory loads.

Yes sir, the Remington HTP is +P and I'm shooting through a 3" barrel.

Target with Buffalo Bore
The attached target is me learning my revolver. I'm shooting Buffalo Bore 38 Special (non +P) 158 grain SWCHP as these are my preferred carry round.
As you can see I have a fair amount of trigger control to work on, but I am particularly proud of the 3 holes that are touching. :-) This was shot at 21' in single-action mode. I know this isn't much for a lot of you sharp shooters, but this is great for a guy like me that drinks way too much coffee.
It is good to know that the ammo and the gun are better than me; it gives me something to work toward

That is a 3" Model 60 Chief's Special Target.
They are extremely accurate little wheel guns

Colt_saa,
Thank you very much for the model information. I had no idea that is what it is called. Interesting.

Isn't the M-60-15 chambered in .357? Velocity of .38 ammo in a .357 is maybe 40 FPS less than when that ammo is fired in a .38 gun.
But I think your results are relevant for my Ruger SP-101 in .357.
My S&W M-60-4 is a .38 and will probably shoot a bit warmer.
On the other hand, if I need more power, the Ruger is a full Magnum blow waiting to strike.

That Hogue grip does look very comfortable.
Yes, these three-inch full lug J-frame .38's and .357's are known for their accuracy.

Thanks for sharing . I have the same 60. As said they are very accurate for a small revolver.
I would also be interested in some other 357 mag velocities. Always wondered how much more they give you out of shorter barrels. I know your hand sure feels them.

Here’s mine....
While I’ve run a few cylinders of .357’s through my 60-15, it wasn’t much fun so I tend to leave these rounds to my K-frames.
For the 60-15, I practice with .38’s and +P’s. The +P is my carry ammo.
I’ve found my example to be quite accurate and a pleasure to carry in a Milt Sparks VMII.

I believe that while the actual cartridge performance does not change with OAT or RH, I believe that the chronograph will provide different readings based on the OAT and RH. Paul Harrell mentions this repeated in his videos.

Congratulations on your model 60 purchase and thanks for taking the time to post the chrono results.
The 60's are very accurate, fun shooters. My wife and I shoot in casual handgun matches each Friday. One match is a sustained fire "hide-out gun" match at 21 feet, 10 shots requiring a reload. My wife often wins that match with her model 60 using mild handloads.
Target from match last week:

ike1518, since you are a reloader and you're wanting to try some hy-tek coated bullets I suggest you also try some of SNS's 130gr coated bullets. I own several .357's ranging in size from a 2" J frame up to an 8 3/8" N frame. The SNS 130gr rnfp bullets are about the best I've found that all of my .357's seem to enjoy. Loaded close to max with titegroup they're extremely accurate. Being cast bullets the max published loads are still pretty soft shooting. Also, congrats on your new 60-15. The best woods gun out there. I somewhat foolishly traded mine for a really nice nickel M19-3. Money wise I came out ahead but I miss shooting my M60.

My Model 60-15 is chambered for 357 Magnum. I had a 3" Ruger SP101 357 Magnum that shot the same ammo a bit quicker. Though my S&W shoots a little slower it could just as well have shot faster. I also wonder how much velocity is affected by the newness of the gun - that barrel just hasn't been shot as much yet.
Good luck with your 3" SP101, it is a very nice revolver.
