Default Magna Porting a Model 60 3"

Thinking about having my Model 60 3" Magna Ported. Has anyone had that done? if so, how would you evaluate the reduction in muzzle flip?

Thank you!

FWIW I mag-na-ported a 3" 65 in the 1980s . ....... would never do it again.

I have a 3" 60-10 .357 and have never even considered it............................

Little effect on .38 or +P 38s and I don't put enough .357s through a 3" carry gun to make it worth while.

Well maybe on a +6 inch hunting revolver.

I sent in a 2 1/2" model 19 back in the '80's.... ruined that gun. If you shot anything hot out of it, it would just about take your eye brows off. Only ported guns I have utilized since then have been I.P.S.C. guns.

I agree with Bam Bam. I have a model 60 in .357 and have never considered porting it.

zogger52,
This Model 60 is from a small run of Factory revolvers that shipped already Mag-Na-Ported and were exclusively distributed by Lew Horton. It was called the Small Hunter

As you know, Mag-Na-Porting reduces muzzle rise, not recoil.

To be most effective at this, the ammunition used must be Full Power 357 Magnum

Using target or mid-range loads, or filling the revolver with 38 Special, even +P will yield little to no perceivable reduction in muzzle rise.

As long as you take all that into consideration, you an make a better informed decision

I like the faster followup shots that a ported handgun offers when shooting full power ammunition.

I have been shooting and carrying various ported magnum handguns for a couple of decades now. I always tend to carry and practice with full power ammunition in those firearms

The increase in blast, fire and noise is, IMO, NOT worth the expense and trouble. I would never buy a ported snubbie; I don't like ported shotguns with their longer barrels........

I still have my old Model 29 4-inch that I had “Magnasnorted” about thirty years ago. I can’t say I terribly regret having it done, but I won’t be needing another one. The ports definitely make a difference with full-power loads, but when I had it done it did not occur to me that I might not be so fond of the difference.

With the ported 4-inch 44, I find recoil is felt straight back through my forearm, and even clear back to my shoulder if I am shooting with a particularly straight arm, for some reason. Without the ports, a similar gun just tries to destroy the web of my hand between thumb and index finger. That is particularly painful to me, so I don’t consider Magnaporting a waste of money. It does help with that.

All in all, I decided it’s easier just to switch to using a 6.5-inch gun, which I find reasonably comfortable to fire, and tend to shoot more accurately, anyway. On a small-caliber gun like the 3-inch J-frame .357, these observations might not apply, but that’s how it worked out for me, FWIW.

Groo here
I have a 2 1/4 SP101 that is ported with the 4 port system.
Having shot WC to "Bear " loads through it , I feel I may comment.
Porting will save the web of the thumb.
The hotter the load the better it works..
Don't care about the blast as ALL revolvers are "ported" [ the cylinder gap]
It lets me shoot ANY level load from the SP and that is what I wanted.....

Can't imagine you'd notice addl blast/flash in this snubby (Un ported 2 3/4" M69 44 Mag):

I've had two magnaported revolvers over the years - a 5" M29 and a 6" FA83 .475 Linebaugh. In a weak moment, I traded off the M29 years ago and don't remember much about flash/blast, or recoil characteristics. I've shot the ported .475 right after a 4" M329 (both with full house loads) and all observers said the 329 was louder and flashier.

I have two of the 2 3/4" M69s, I may just send one to Magnaport after the first of the year.

FWIW,

Paul

True. And they dirty the **** out of you front sights too......Have been known to blow front sight inserts out too.

Shoot one in the dark and tell me you still like it.

I have shot the ported, 2 1/2" 41 Magnum, Taurus 415T in the dark and I still like it

I have shot many different low light courses over the decades with several ported person defense firearms and I still like them

Personally I carry Self Defense style ammunition in mine. Most of those major manufacturers use low flash or flash suppressant added powders in their ammunition

They are not the same flashy powders that hand loaders, white box, green box, yellow box and foreign bargain brands use when trying to get the least expensive practice ammunition possible

As has already been pointed out . . . any flash from the barrel/cylinder gap greatly out shines whatever is left to come out of a port at the far end of the barrel

I admit that ported firearms are not for everyone, but there are those of us that like them.

Kind of like which truck is better? Chevy or Ford?

I really think you'd regret it. Leave the barrel alone!

One reason you buy a three-inch barrel over a true snub is to get added velocity. Why throw some of that away by porting?

Then you have more places to clean, too, and have probably little to no advantage.

I also suspect that blast is increased.

Put that money into nicer grips or a new gun or knife.

And I think porting reduces the value of the gun!

IMHO, Don't do it!

What a complete waste of money, and handgun, porting is!

I have owned exactly ONE ported revolver, got rid of it about 10 years ago and trust me when I tell you, I will NEVER own another.

Did I mention that IMHO they are a complete waste?

For me, NO! From my experience, NO! My very considered opinion and advice in answer to your question, for you, no! Only possibly maybe, for a large bore hunting handgun, and then, not likely for me.

It is your gun do what you want with it.
I sort of regret having my 65LS magnaported, only because of the now rising prices of nice examples. When I had it done, the gun came to me brand new from Gander Mountain for less than $400.00 on a clearance sale. At the time the S&W performance center making a gun just like a LS and sending it to Magnaport, so it was ported from the "factory". So, off my gun went. I carry full house 158s in it and it defiantly makes a difference. It is what it is, I'll never sell it, so who cares.
