Default Model 60-1 Ashland?

Hello all, new to the forum. I purchased several years ago a smith ss model 60-1 simply because I liked the feel and look of the snub nose revolver. It has the fixed front sight and adjustable rear sight. It is a short barrel 1-7/8?? The serial number starts with ALUxxxx. Is this a limited production Ashland? Thank you in advance.

Welcome! Yes, if original this is one of the special production run for the (now defunct) Ashland company in 1985, 660 made by report.

This is a link to a closed sales ad of unknown age:

1985 Smith Wesson 60 2 Inch Target Ashland NIB

Hope this is helpful.

Did the Ashland’s serial numbers all start with ALU?

I have not seen one that was not an ALU prefix but someone in Forum-land may have one.

Ok, thank you all for the replies. Is there a way to contact smith and Wesson and find out more about the gun I have?

My model 60 is an Ashland Shooting Supply gun purchased new around 1985. They marketed it as 1 of 5000. It currently sports factory combat grips. The original Magna grips are in the box. My serial number begins ALU. I've posted on it before but here it is with the original ad from Shotgun News. You can contact S&W for a factory letter to confirm the shipping for your gun.

Welcome to the Forum

The Model 60 Chiefs Special Target that I shoot and carry has an ALU prefix while the Model 60 Chiefs Special Target that is still pristine in the box has an AIV prefix.

Though I much prefer the look of the blued steel Model 50 Chiefs Special Target, the stainless is more practical

And I do love that big Shark's Fin front sight on these guys

They best way to contact Smith and Wesson is to just call them on the phone. However do not be surprised if they have very little to tell you about a revolver that has been discontinued for 3 decades. They can probably provide you with the Product Code and a Date of Manufacture. They might even be able to tell you how many revolvers were in the run, but that does not happen often

There are several hard cover book that talk about the Chiefs Special Target revolvers in all if it's various configurations over the last half century right up to the currently available 3" version

If you call them, you 'may' get very basic information (year shipped). The letter of authenticity will give you the date it left the factory and its destination, but don't be surprised if that turns out to be Ashland, OH .

I just got one of these. NIB old inventory. Anyone know if there is a specific type holster needed to accommodate the larger front blade sight on these?
