So far it will be the S&W "revolver action package" and a bright polishing job. They just received the gun so maybe in the next few hundred years during the next ice age after the ancient aliens come back to Earth to enslave us again Ill report back on here with what the pros at S&W did to the gun... With pictures of course!

The fluted barrel is too modern for you. Better send me that gun when you get it back.

Thats interesting that you mention that fluted barrel. I guess they did that to make it lighter??? Well it does feel a bit lighter and to be honest the 640 Pro feels to be the same weight as a S&W model 60 or model 36. Its a great self defense gun that I think is widely overlooked and underrated. I think I would rather have the 640 Pro than any Ruger SP 101. Just my honest opinion...

Funny you should say that.. When I was trying to decide which I wanted, a lot of people put the 640 Pro behind the SP101, Colt Cobra, k6s, and a couple of people even put it behind the regular 640 wwith the lock... The 640 wasn't getting love....

One of the reasons I feel as though the S&W 640 Pro is in the top 5 BEST self defense revolvers of all time is for one main reason... I explain in a bit but I noticed that pretty much every revolver I own when it comes to reloading there ALWAYS seems to be at least one or two empty spent casing clinging on to dear life in the cylinder after a few hard cylinder dump/ejections. I inevitably always have to take a free hand and snag those spent casings out. In a self defense scenario thats not really a good thing going on there.. The easy answer to that would be moon clips. The 640 Pro dumps those spent moon clips LIGHTNING FAST. Also the ejection rod seems to be a bit longer than most snub nose revovlers out there and that does make a big difference believe it or not on reloads. You know the old sayings... "if it aint done in 5 shots it was never meant to be!" Is it??? I think reloading self defense guns is really important. Also the fact that the 640 is about as light a revolver as I want to go with 357 mags and its very easy to conceal being of course a J frame. You really cant get any better than the S&W 640 Pro unless you can figure out away to attach a 50 caliber high explosive armor piercing belt fed machine gun feeding mechanism to your favorite revolver

FWIW, my 442 has not had any brass hang up during ejection. I don't recall it ever happening once. Now my Colt Detective Special. Yes. It happens with that. I don't recall it happening with my Model 19 either. But I might not have been paying attention as well with that one. I didn't feel that one was a top defensive gun for me when I first got it. But now it does do bedside duty I'll have to keep a closer eye on that.

I also wanted to add that Im a firm believer in those Pachmayr Compact rubber grips. No other rubber grip really provides the cushion and shooting ability of those grips. There is a lot of meat on the back strap of those grips that really aid in saving the web of your hand from recoil.
Plus they are compact enough to barely get by with pocket carry. Its really stretching it though... Trust me your hand will thank you especially with full 357 loads. Even though the magna service grips hide better theres no way I would shoot this gun with those little magna service grips. You should have at least one pair of these Pachmayrs in your inventory. There cheap hand insurance!

Here is a nice disassembly instruction on the S&W 640. I like the guys technique on removing the side plate screws and removing the side plate. Good stuff to know!

I will be curious how the much Performance Center can improve your action as I believe it came from the Performance Center in the first place.
I don't fine mine to fit well in the pocket due to the CT LG 350 Lasergrips. They increase the overall size but are great for IWB/OWB carry.

As for the moonclips, you are correct they do a great job of extraction but due to the very thin moonclips and the length of the cartridges, I personally find them to be very difficult to reliably load quickly. Somewhat like pushing a garden hose. I only carry speedstrips.

Overall you will wind up with a great carry gun and please follow up with pics when you get it back.

I sent it off last week. I havent heard back from them yet. Usually they would get back with me on what they can do to the gun.

The S&W Pro Series from what I gather seems to be there midline custom guns. There not top of the line performance guns but there not run-of-the-mill front line production guns either. The Pro Series is basically a production gun with little improvements here and there. The 640 Pro from what I see is just a regular 640 with a fluted barrel, dovetail night sights, and cylinder machined to accept moon clips. The internals look the same and feel the same as the stock 640 if there is a difference I cant tell. I might be wrong on all that though they could of done something inside the gun at the factory I have no idea.

I just received the new gun back from S&W. Looks very nice! The trigger feels smooth as warm butter on hot toast! It took a lot of time to buff this gun to this brilliant high polish shine. I called S&W and thanked the gunsmith for the good work! I sent the gun with no grips on it and they sent the gun back with these complimentary wood grips that look really nice. Now to find out if it shoots as good as it looks?

What you can do is keep it loaded with a moon clip but carry speed loaders or speed strips for re loading.

Love mine!! I appreciate the extras the pro brings. For me the 640 Pro is well worth the extra dough.

It was about $350 for all the work done to it including any shipping costs. From shopping around S&W was the best deal for the amount of work I wanted done.

Default My 640 PRO

This is my PRO. I polished it myself, smoothed out the trigger action and installed a combat trigger. Looks much better now and shoots great.

Ive been evaluating the 640 Pro for awhile now and I have to say that it dosent get much better than this! For example the gun has the feel of an older well made all steel model 60 but has some modern touches and conveniences of night sights and a fluted barrel. Its like the old meets new! I like that! I have a new Harley Davidson with fuel injection but I made the bike look like it was a chopper straight out of the beaches of California in 1965. I have an old Ford Ranchero that has a new fuel injected motor. In other words I like the look of the old stuff without the burdens of that old garbage!

Back to the Smith 640 it is no exception to my taste. Also some are under the impression that MIM parts on new guns lead one to believe that its no good. Im here to tell you that MIM parts are a NONE PROBLEM if they are done well by the manufacturer. In fact I prefer a lot of the MIM parts to the old hand fitted parts of yesteryear. Mostly because good luck trying to get those old parts for your old hand fitted gun but also Ive replaced a lot of new parts on new guns with little to no hand fitting, extra time, or added money. Those MIM parts that your so worried about will by far outlast most of you and your children and your children's children.. You probably get the point...

I think its safe to say Im a big fan of this Pro!
