Strange Serial No - cannot find any information even in the S&W Standard Catalogue
Hi folks,
greetings from Germany! I am new to this forum and I got a question already at the very beginning ;-)
Some days ago I purchased a S&W 686 Model, 6" and I am of course interested in the manufacturing date. The Serial I checked already the Revolver Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson (Standard Catalog of Smith and Wesson) 4th edition, but did not succeed. No match of the Serial numbers.
Here is the code/ Serial No.: ABW2251
Can anybody help me with this issue? Thanks in advance!
Best Regards
Reiner aka Pandemius

Sometime between January and October 1983 I’d guess. ABL4000 is listed as Jan’03 and ADE6700 is listed as Oct’83, so it would have to fall in that range.

The S&W serial numbers that start off with three letters (triple alphas) are notoriously difficult to track. Congratulations on getting your 686. They are almost certainly the most popular revolver on this forum in my unscientific observation. Gratuitous picture:

S&W 686 serial number for date of manufacturer
I have a S&W 686 stainless steel 6 inch barrel-serial number ACM3732 and could anyone please let me know when it’s was made?plus any other info-I read that the letter ,M, means that it was modified. I would greatly appreciate any information.

As Houston Rick noted, triple-Alpha serial numbers are difficult to date with any consistency. 4th Edition Standard Catalog of Smith and Wesson shows that ACL and ACP were shipped in in 1983. Other AC prefix numbers were shipped in 1984, 1985, and 1986. There is no listing for ACM.
The M is part of the serial number and has no other meaning.

686 triple alpha serial numbers
I appreciate the help and i will double check under the grips to see if the numbers match. I also have a highway patrolman and i will send you the serial number on that one later tonight. If my serial number for the 686 is not in the S&W book would you recommend that i call S&W?
Again many thanks

You can email Smith and Wesson your serial number and they will tell you the year it was shipped.

Oldster:
If I understand correctly they started putting the sn in the yoke cut of the frame along with the butt when more and more grips stocks started covering gun butts.

Bobby:
I called, not e-mailed, them today about square butt M&P m-1905 .38 spl. revolvers #270xxx and 633xxx and got told 1902-3 for 270 and 1904-5 for 633. The hand on the other end eliminated round butts and 32-20s right off though which got my hopes up for a reliable answer.
I may well be corrected a few posts down but I think this may be some the wrongest info I've ever received.
