I inherited a pristine model 13 -1 from my father recently, and want to change the factory wood grips out for some rubber ones that completely cover the backstrap, to reduce felt recoil.

The only thing I can find are Pachmeyers. Does anyone know of another choice ? I would prefer some with finger grooves.

Try a search for Uncle Mike's K frame grips. They may be just what you are looking for. They cover the back strap but feel less bulky than Pachmeyers. They even have a hint of a Coke bottle shape.

I think the Uncle Mike's grips are just the thing for a K frame .357 that will be used. With a 4" Model 13/19/65/66 they make magnum 158s at 1250 fps manageable. If you handload you might find that 158 gr SWCs at 1000-1150 fps makes for enjoyable shooting and plenty of power, right in the .38/44 heavy duty or .45 ACP/.45 Colt energy range.

Pachmayr makes covered backstrap grips with finger grooves, they are called the Gripper Decelerator (as opposed to the Professional) version. They are pretty long front to back. The Uncle Mike's version is smaller.

Pachmayr Presentation Compac grips fit this old 3" Model 13-2 very well, cover the back strap, and comfortably absorb recoil in my average size hand. These are soft rubber like Hogue. Available on ebay in the sub-$40 range. I tried a set of Uncle Mikes but the screw interfered with the main spring.

I just picked up some Hogues today . I will probably go ahead and order some Pachmeyers also.

This was the first handgun my father ever bought. He purchased it in the early 1970s. I was a young boy and was with him when he bought it. It has been probably 40 years since I have fired it, and am anxious to take it to the range and get reacquainted with it. The trigger is super smooth and I love the recessed cylinder, and pinned Barrel.

How do you tell if this is a 3in or a 4in barrel? Do you measure from the forcing cone, or where the barrel connects to the frame?

With a revolver, always from the cylinder face to muzzle. The photo shows your gun has a 4" barrel; some model 13s starting with the later -2 variant had 3" barrels, now highly sought after and expensive.

I won’t put anything but wood on an old Smith. With that being said, my 13-3 wears these combats by Culina and it handles magnum rounds with ease. They fit like a glove!

A couple of suggestions, if you want "rubber" grips Pachmayr Pro Compac, similar to those shown above but with an uncovered backstrap. I have small hands and these fit better. These are on a 19-5 round butt



My last issued revolver was a Model 13, three inch round butt. We ordered it with the round butt target (banana) grips. These are more comfortable to me than finger grove grips.



Another option is magna grips with a grip adapter. Here faux ivory with a BK Grip Adapter. Very comfortable to hold and shoot for me with my small hands.

Uncle Mike's grips

Some of the model 13's (maybe just the 3 inch barrels?) came with a very functional rubber grip (covering backstrap). All these model 13's are very good shooters and you will enjoy it a great deal.
