Default Your Favorite Smith Revolver

I am overdue for a survey and picture thread. What is your favorite Smith Revolver that you own (or would like to own) and why?

Mine is likely my Model 28 Highway Patrolman. It introduced me to shooting and owning Smith revolvers and I have enjoyed revolvers as much as semiautomatics since. I bought it on a lark way back when I only owned third and fourth generation Smith semi-autos and thought revolvers were antiques. The gun show was closing and a small dealer was looking around for buyers. Not having seen anything else, I offered him $400 cash for the 357 Smith Revolver on the table and he said "its yours". I always use this Model 28 when accuracy counts and revolvers are allowed.

4inch 19-2

Manufactured late '62 to early '63, within months of when I was "manufactured". My favorite caliber and the perfect size revolver for me. Pinned front sight, excellent hand fitting and my favorite era of finish quality. Diamond targets do not hurt either.

Default Favorite Revolver

For now, I would have to say that my recently acquired Model 18-4 .22 Combat Masterpiece is my favorite. It's one of three Model 18's I currently own, doesn't have a pinned barrel like the other two, but does it ever shoot! It will consistently shade my other two by close to 1/2" on target.

Model 18-4, TT, TH, CS, Shipped 1982.

The blued 4-inch Model 15 with
contoured barrel.

Sometimes been without one but
always seem to get one and now more
than a few.

To me it's the center jewel in the
S&W crown.

There are bigger, more powerful, better ballistics, with more pizazz. But it’s hard to beat a good ol’ Chiefs Special. Easy in the pocket or on the belt. It’s just plain easy to use and carry and it will generally handle any job asked of it.

Put time in general construction a few years. Hard work from the ground up with many hand tools, power tools, chainsaws, and raw materials manipulation. The hands became extraordinary strong, and used to holding on to sledgehammer handles, but there were crab claw days where it took a while before the hands would open up in the morning. Now, I’m a somewhat educated keyboard warrior, but holding on to a 6” blue 29-3 with target stocks sits just right, feels comfortable, and calls my memory forward from those construction days. I sometimes walk my property trails with it grasped in either hand leaving the shoulder holster empty for the journey. Ah, those were good o’l days swinging a hammer.

That's a bit tough. I don't think there's a 6" K or N frame I don't like of the ones I have known. But I'll have to go with the 657. It shoots so well.

To be fair, that's a one-off target. But still even in the aggregate..

Default Kframes are my favorite

I just like a model 10 4" for it simplicity and accuracy. The tapered bbl. is also my preference.

I currently only have two, a 642ND and a 642-1. Of the two, I'd probably have to say the 642ND because it has the better finish as well as a trigger job, so the trigger pull is really nice. Having said that, the 642-1 is the one I nearly always carry as I don't worry about it as much as my 642ND, which I bought new over 20 years ago.

As far as the one I'd like to own...

I've mentioned this several times before, but a 640ND is my "grail gun." I've come close to getting one a couple of times on gun auctions, but every time the bidding ends up exceeding my budget. I've never seen one locally. I've seen them for sale here a time or two, but I couldn't afford it.

Someday...

*sigh*

Truthfully, I agree with Mike, above.

Having a lot of them in big calibers, I find myself shooting and spending more time with the .22 rimfires. I have 5 in model 63 (one is below). I carry one of these a lot when hiking.

TIED with the 63 are the model 18's. I own 6 of them, 2 being Pre-18. THREE are pictured below, the TOP one being made in 1951 and has the smoothest action of any Smith I have ever fired.

I guess it could be said that the models 63 and 18 would be my favorites or last ones to go, not because they are effective defense weapons, but for the sheer fun they bring to this old geezer.

Y'all take care, Bo in western NC

Mine is probably my 6.5 inch 629-4. It doesn’t matter if I’m shooting a tight group on paper at 15 yards , or ringing steel at 50 yards, I love this gun!

My favorite S&W revolver is a 1977 Model 36-1 that belonged to my Dad. My Mom gave it to me about 3 years ago and I take it out occasionally for relaxing range time and rekindling memories of when he carried it when we went fishing together.

Has some wear from his left-handed holster carry and he had the grips and trigger changed out, but it is all there with the box and paperwork. It is beautiful to me.

My last, longed for revolver. The M 28 that introduced me to S&W revolvers. Not this one, but the first one I had to borrow to graduate from the Police Academy and shot the old FBI course.

My favorite continues to be the 586 4" in nickel. It hits what I aim at, balance is great, and greatly appeals to me in nickel finish. S&W's finest design IMO.

Why I have many favorites, for different reasons...My favorite to carry, my Favorite to shoot, etc, but an overall favorite comes down to this well worn 19-3. I have cooler guns, prettier guns, rarer guns, but only this one was my Dad's gun. The knife with it he bought me when I was 9 or 10 and taught me how to pick out a good knife and how to use it safely.

For me, it's the M 28-2. The thing is scary accurate.

In its previous life, this piece was allowed to rust and pit, so, when I acquired it, cosmetic surgery was prescribed and performed in the gun hospital. Pics:

Close second is the M 66-1, P&R'ed...

Favorites have to be the 14-5,6,7 underlug models, but the favorite is the 4" model. Just makes me smile to shoot them.

So....
If I REALLY had to pick a favorite it would be my Dads K-38 duty revolver from when he was sheriff in North Dakota for a couple years.

Randy

Sadly, this is one of the ones that was stolen from me on 14 May 2020....

Due to the restrictive gun laws in my country, I only own 2 Smiths: a model 617 no-dash and my favorite one, this model 14-2. It is a beauty and it's very accurate. I enjoy using it in ISSF centerfire matches, and beating some of the guys who use expensive .32 autos, with a 50+ year-old gun that looks like a real gun, and not like a stapler

I can honestly say it will be one of these 5. Most likely the 28-2 I reworked to handle the 45 ACP cartridge. I would swap stocks with the ACP Mountain Gun as I prefer the feel of the square butt.

In the second photo, it is the top revolver with the correct stocks.

It's a very difficult question for me. Especially after several of my gorgeous revolvers were water damaged inside my safe during the fire. But they are still shooters. However, this is my second S&W revolver purchased decades ago (snubby Model 10-7) - (my first revolver having blown up - long story told elsewhere) and it is still pristine and still locks up as tight as a bank vault:

Then there's this little custom job - which also survived the fire after being buried under quite a few inches of soot and debris - but it didn't actually get water damaged, just filthy, and it's all clean now but the stocks are darker than they used to be:

Query - do you think the black Cerakote protected the metal? Does that explain why it survived so nicely?

After that , well, then I'm asking myself, which one of the after the fire, pristine S&W revolvers is a favorite or THE favorite and each one has its moments, I assure you.

I’ve owned many, many S&W revolvers. I have carried them as Military Police, a City Police Officer, and as a Civilian. I’ve owned most of the J,K,N and L frames common to LE.

If I had to pick one as being the best; it would have to be the 6” 686. It is a workhorse that is built to last and the most accurate revolver I have owned. I got rid of my last 6” awhile back, and now I have decided its time to get another.

The beautiful blue of a new 4” Model 19 runs a close second though.

The question comes up here from time to time. When I give it some thought, it’s always the Model 19. As John Rippert said in his post, it’s just about perfect for me, and I don’t anticipate needing more power than .357 here in Indiana.

Any of my 2 1/2" model 19/66's. They are small enough to carry, but feel like a real gun in my hand.
Sorry for the lack of photos, but I fried the H.D. on my lap top and haven't taken new photos yet.

My favorite S&W revolver has to be my 60-10. It has been a good packing gun in wild country out west and is easy to shoot well, even at long distances, i.e. 50 yards. It is controllable, even with 158 gr. JSP .357 factory loads. It has a lot going for it in a small package. It sits on the night stand every night.

Tough question, but at least there’s no wrong answer; I appreciate all of them individually. Although my 4" 686-3 was my first, I have to go with the prelock/MIM 2.5” 66, mostly for its aesthetics and sentimentality, it’s the one that started my fascination with S&W revolvers.

My lowly six inch 28-3 sure isn’t as nice as some on here. I had a 50 year long S&W gunsmith do his magic on it before he retired and it is an awesome shooter.

My 66-4 has the best trigger of any handgun that I own and it looks great to boot, dressed for work or play.

It is a toss up between my 4" 28-2,3.5" 27-2 and my 6.5" 29-2.
