Model 648 .22 Magnum
My Smith & Wesson Model 648 chambered in .22 Winchester Magnum Rimfire is in at my FFL. See pic. In Hawaii we have a 14 day waiting period before we can pick it up. It's the first one in Hawaii! I will be posting vids on my YouTube once I have it. Stay tuned...

Nice! Do you have field plans for it, or is it a range only gun?

Just a plinker and it's the perfect "date" revolver. You know to train the ladies haha. I always wanted a 617 but wished it was chambered in .22 mag. My wish has been granted.

New Reintroduced 22Mag
Thank You for showing off that new Revolver!
Your the first that I know of to have one.
You will have to give us the run down on that
and more pictures.
That new S&W intrigues me.
My 617s 4" and 6" barrels.

I wonder how practical it would be to have a second cylinder fitted to it, chambered in 22 LR? My thrifty Scots blood (or is the Scotch in my blood?) objects to tracking down and paying the much higher price for 22 Mag ammo. Having both available in one gun now, that is an attractive idea to me!

I have a 617 6" in 22 LR, and I love it. Tack driver with Federal and CCI ammo. Always wondered about a 22 Mag cylinder for it. Hmmm - maybe a whole gun, instead?

I'm a great fan of the .22 WMR, and have two revolvers and three rifles chambered for it. Only downside is the relatively expensive ammo.
Hope your 648 shoots as well as my old 48 (1975)!

What is the advantage of a WMR over LR in a handgun? I have both 617/648. The ballistics of the WMR are designed for a rifle not a handgun so I am questioning my choices.

The .22 WMR pushes its bullet out of the muzzle of a nominal-length barrel in a revolver at about the velocity of a hi-speed .22 LR in a rifle. Thus it gives you the power of a .22 LR rifle, but with the portability and handiness of a handgun.
Winchester’s initial specs for the .22 WMR, fired from a 6.5” test barrel, had a 40-grain bullet moving at a muzzle velocity of 1550 feet per second, with a concurrent muzzle energy of 213 foot-pounds. This gives the WMR an effective range of up to about 100 yards with a handgun.
The .22 LR in a handgun is nowhere near as effective as when shot through a rifle, and its effective range is limited.
These are generalities. A lot depends on the specific .22 WMR load and the length of the revolver's barrel - longer is certainly better.
John

Answer: use ammo designed for short barrels. My choice for serious use would be Hornady Critical Duty or Speer Gold Dots.
I shoot a PMR 30 - 4.6" barrel and no gap of course. Definitely can tell a difference in the smack on targets between 22 Mag and LR.
Plus the mag can have a much more sophisticated bullet.

Out of a 6" bull barrel, the .22 WMR is gonna perform like a champ.
That actually wouldn't be a bad home defense platform.

Nice ,when you open the cylinder what dash did they label it. 648-3 ? They jumped a few numbers with the 18 & 48’s . I see a few are on an auction site under “ other S&W’s”.

Did you put the touch-up paint on the front sight?
We need a video when you take it out. This piece intrigues me.
Thanks for posting.

Don't mind my lousy groups. I got it close enough on my final group. Now to take it out to 100 yards.

I have one also and I love it. I bring a tooth brush and and a bore brush to the range because there is usually excessive Schmutch fouling after firing 30 plus rounds...lots of unburnt powder no matter what ammo I use. Enjoy it!

I was wondering why there was so much sand in my pile of spent brass and realized it was powder.

I picked mine up today from Yog at Great Northern Guns here in Anchorage. I think it is the first and only 8-shot 648-2 in Alaska. I've got a Wolff spring kit, Hogue grips and an Allchin red dot mount on the way. I've already got a Leupold DeltaPoint Pro to put on it. My old eyes make it hard to focus on the front sight.

Welcome to the S&W Forum! You picked a nice way to introduce yourself. I think I would hold off on the spring kit until I established a performance baseline with the factory springs, but that’s just the scientist in me talking. Hope you’ll enjoy it.

You may have heard this story before.
I too am drawn to the .22 Magnum and looked for what seemed an eternity and finally gave up and decided to seek out a Magnum cylinder for the M-617-1. Not as easy as I first thought finding a Mag cylinder compatable with my M-617-1 because of the changes made to the ejector star and the dash one engineering change did not seem related as the other revolver I located had the new type ejector star also being a 617-1. The cylinder was fitted and I have a convertible using the .22 LR frame & barrel and am proud to say it shoots just fine. Not long ago I found a M-63 with a Magnum cylinder ( No .22 LR Cylinder) haven't shot it yet but am looking forward to that opportunity.

Beautiful revolver - If it were mine the next step would be to put a set of Culina fiddleback maple target grips on it. Oh, except for production time, no 14 day wait for those.

Very nice, I didn't know they made one in .22 Mag with the underlug like that. I sure do love my 617-6, it's a sweet gun. After so many years of larger calibers and the expense of ammo even when reloading, the .22 rimfire is wonderful. It's been a rekindled love to return to the .22 LR.

Have you tried any of the pistol specific 22 mag ammo? CCI and Hornady make it and I'm sure there are others.

At 75 yds my groups are a hair under Three inches. I am sure I can do better but I didn’t have a lot of time that day. As a side note, I had no problems with fouling or ejection of spend cartridges.
