Default I ordered a model 29 6.5"

I have had an itch to buy another S&W 44 magnum. I already have a model 629 Classic 6.5" 44 magnum. I have been shopping specifically for a model 29. I found numerous used ones in varying barrel lengths and many new in 4". I found a new model 29 6.5" 44 magnum yesterday and immediately sucked it up.

Now I am waiting for it to ship to my local FFL.

Congrats on the new gun. I recently have been looking at some of the "new" S&W .44 mags, and have found them to be well made and finished. The blueing is darker than on the earlier guns (different process), but well done with a nice polish. Miss the CH trigger & hammer, and don't need a lock, but those are aesthetic issues - they work fine.

Recently bought a PC .44 magnum Hunter and a model 69, along with a 626-6 a few years back, and have found all to be well machined and very accurate. Bores and chamber throats are properly sized and consistent, more so than some of the earlier P&R guns, and I believe that contributes to the good accuracy. These new generation guns are shooters.

Pictures and a range report when you get a chance would be nice.

Larry

I have a 29-2, 6" and find it to be a great revolver and recently acquired a new 629-6, 5" which I haven't had a chance to fire yet. The 29 is a pleasure to shoot and when magnums get to be too much for me, I switch to specials - which is quite often.

"Handgun accuracy" is 1% gun, and 99% shooter.

Ummmm... maybe... maybe not. These are production revolvers, so it's luck of the draw. Back in the day, IHMSA shooters preferred the Dan Wesson 44 Magnum. They were overbuilt for the 44 Magnum cartridge and it was really hard to wear them out. The tensioned barrel system also made them consistently accurate.

Out shooting one or the other is more of a shooter ability then the gun...

In the last 15 years I've only had two out of at least 100 handguns that wouldn't shoot/group no matter what I or others tried.

This is true most, if not all the time.

The real beauty of the .44 mag is opened up when you start hand loading. You can load a 240 grain hardcast SWC anywhere from a light .44 spl target load, up to handload that will kill anything in the Western Hemisphere. And you can load any kind of .430 bullet they make.
