I recently obtained a model 686 4" . How can I tell what type frame it is?

All 686s are "L" frames.

Are asking about frame size(such as L-Frame) or whether is is square butt or round?

To see if it's round or square butt, remove the grips. and compare to these pics...

A 686-1 with a 6 inch barrel I bought new was my first S&W and is still my favorite.

If you want to know what dash #, open the cylinder and look on the frame under the yoke.
