Unhappy .41 Magnum Question

LGS has a black 41 mag. with gold fill on the barrel. Can't find any pics or info, it is not a pre-lock and has wood grips. Model 57-6

That is not much to go on.

Any chance that you have access to the original box which would have a product code on the label?

The gold fill was done after it left the factory.

The wood grips are probably not original either. . . . . I also changed mine to wood grips

Is what you have a Mountain Gun?

A Mountain gun is 4" tapered barrel, Round Butt frame, Black ramp and black notch rear sight, black powder bevel on front of cylinder. It would have shipped with rubber grips

Black, as in bead blasted black, or is it a blued gun? 57-6's came out in 2009 in the "classic" series and were blued.

Black finish is it painted or black park finish?
They came in stainless, blue, nickel finishes. I never seen black.

The bonanza gold inlay kit was a hot ticket decades ago a diy gold inlay lettering. I still have two boxes of the gold inlay kits.

So if it’s not the orginal finish, and gold inlay what’s the value your asking?( shooter, plinker great caliber)

If it’s orginal the value will be higher.

Finally got to talk to shop owner about it, he said the finish is factory but is so "deep it looks black; he hasn't seen another gun that black looking, someone mentioned the inlay kit and that is his opinion also. This owner is now deceased and the estate has brought in 87 handguns for consignment, he knew the owner and said "he was a bit of a "Tinkerer"....It's priced at new gun price's, such is life in California for a gun owner....

The gold inlay neither adds or subtracts from the value. The 57-6 variation was introduced in 2009, so if its in immaculate condition its worth paying today's price. All I can suggest is go see it.

My experience with a 41 mag Mtn Gun, is surprisingly accurate and a pleasure at the range both on steel and paper.

Model 57 - S&W Classics 6" .41 Magnum | Smith & Wesson

the 57-6 is the Classic series and is only available in blue with 6" barrel now, previously was also available with 4" barrel and in nickel finish.

At this point in my life I added the 41 mag to my lineup of calibers. It may be my last new caliber.

Here's a pic of the gold fill kit mentioned from the 70's.

I'm pretty sure that acetone and a toothbrush can remove that gold lettering without any harm to the original finish.
