My Latest Score- A 3" 65-3
I spotted this at my LGS last week and obsessed about it until finally I went back and bought it. It's a 65-3, and my first 3" K frame, with bobbed hammer and action job. It came with 400 rounds of assorted ammo and the original stocks, which I would have installed for the photo if they had included the screw. I paid $695 OTD, which seemed a little steep, but if you figure in the price of the ammo, and the fact that I REALLY wanted it, I'm more than happy with it.

Nice! I’d probably give it serious consideration for $695. The bobbed hammer bugs me.

Me, too, a little bit. I figure I'd shoot it before deciding to replace it. The SA pull is pretty light, but it's not a target gun, so we'll see.

As long as the firearm is in good condition, I'd have made that purchase in a New York minute. I have a Model 13 in that configuration. I carry it with a Safariland speed-loader and have never felt under-gunned.

Set one up like that in the 80s.....shot and qualified with it DA..... good to go out to 25 yds.
Red ramp is probably not factory...... I added one to mine for a faster sight picture.
Those are great grips for carry ...... only thing better are Spegel Boot grips.

I bought one in November at the Tulsa Arms Show. Shoots great. Enjoy yours.

I have a 65 worked-over by the S&W Custom Shop. They also bobbed the hammer, made a DA pull to die for and specs tight. Original box marked "Custom" and all the papers to include the original warranty card never sent to S&W. I paid considerably more than you did. I think you did fine on the price. Enjoy.

My opinion is that was a great price, and the ammo sweetened the deal. You did well my friend.

Check out usagunsandgear.com for a hammer (plus plenty of other s&w stuff). No affiliation of any kind.

My Model 13 3" came with those Compac grips too. Took some warming up to them but I actually love them now. Excellent thin low profile.
Personally I love the bobbed hammer. A DA/SA hammer is pretty handy though if you need to take a more precise shot.

Nice! Reminds me of the 3" 65-3 I used to have.

I prefer a bobbed hammer, but I don't like that it's not DAO. Trying to raise/lower the hammer without a spur is a bad idea. If I were in your position I'd either convert it to DAO or put a standard hammer in place. But that's just my preference.
Either way, it looks like you got a fine revolver. Maybe not the best price, but I'd consider it a fair deal.
FYI, I'm a big fan of the PGS Hideout smooth/non-finger-grooved grips for the K-frame. Good balance between concealability and control, at least for small hands like mine.
Enjoy!

I just put my 65-2 on lay-a-way. My price was a little less than yours but I didn't get ammo with it. Nice buy!

Very nice. I have the same model, un-bobbed, with the same "professional" grips. Probably my, if I could keep only one revolver, revolver. Good for carry, home defense and range.

I had a 65-3 set up with a bobbed hammer and Pachmayrs. Great shooter. Sadly it was stolen along with 3 others (a M28, M49 and a 1911).

Trifecta agreement:
1) I too prefer a bobbed hammer -- higher grip, better recoil management.
2) Agreed, should be converted to true DAO, i.e., no single action notch (there's a reason factory bobbed hammers shipped this way).
3) I also love the PGS Hideout grips -- they fill the hand just enough, are still nice and compact for carry, and are inexpensive. After a light stipple with a soldering iron I find them near perfect.

My Latest Score- A 3" 65-3
I’m still hunting one. I have the model 64 with the DAO hammer and it’s a tack driver. It’s my favorite range gun when I want to look good in DA.
I have a 65-8 in 4” with the hole that I want to sell and replace it with the 3”.
That’s a pretty decent price. At 25 cents a round which is a good average number you paid $595.
That’s what these are bringing in general. Some a bit more. Some a lot more and of course there is always that deal someone stumbles into but I thing you are bang on the average.

That looks like a great carry piece. I agree with others who recommend removing the single-action sear. The front sight insert appears to be very well done.
Here's my 65-3, just to fit in.

Very nice piece and great price!
when you all are talking about removing the single action sear.....
help me out with that....
there is no part to remove. its just a matter of removing the edge or notch at the bottom of the hammer so it does not make contact with the trigger.
if I am off on this... let me know.
I would have bought it for 695. I am still kicking myself for letting go a 65-3 that I paid $300 for years ago.
