629-4 5" in the house.
Picked this up Friday.
Someone had polished it at some point in it's life.
Shipped in Dec. 1995.
Can't have too many 5" 44's in the house.....this makes 3
Just might take to the woods next week in WV for doe hunt.
Wishing all a Merry Christmas!!!

Very nice find Masterbuck... l don't think l've seen a Smith 629 in a store
around Augusta Ga in many a moon. Even over here in the PROMISE LAND
of South Carolina its been awhile too. lts possible that 5 incher could be a ''DX''.
Without a fresh Ben Franklin to Uncle Roy you may never know.
MERRY CHRISTMAS

The 5" is the best of both worlds. Short enough barrel to carry easily and long enough to give a decent sight radius. Balances extremely well too and not muzzle heavy.

Well stated. I carried my 5” in an outfitters chest rig all hunting season with comfort and ease.

Very nice .44! Maybe my (potentially) favorite version of the modern guns. I say potentially because I always have my eyes open for one but haven’t found it yet. I do have a 6.5-inch gun, which is a great shooter, but decidedly muzzle heavy for anything but shooting from a rest, as far as I’m concerned.
Congratulations on that one!

I use the Blackhawk alaska guide holster as my go to rig. The 5" fits quite nicely and totally covered. The muzzle of my 6.5" is exposed.
If I had to pick just one 629 to own, it would be a hard choice between the 5" and the 6.5". Currently carry a 629-5 6.5" w/ powerport for those pesky whitetails that wonder within 40 yards of my treestand. The 6.5" is slightly muzzle heavy, but the extra 1.5" does have some advantages. The 5" is just easier to carry and would be the choice for daily carry. I shoot both well. All my 629s like the Sierra 210 JHP over a modest load of Enforcer and average 1.5" or less @ 50 yards. Good middle of the road bullet weight for deer that has plenty of penetration for whitetails, modest recoil, yet doesn't beat the gun up.

My everyday carry gun is a 629-6 (SKU 163636) 5" N-Frame .44mag "Classic" (full-underlug). I carry it from pajamas-off until pajamas-on, in a homemade cloth under-the-shirt vertical shoulder holster rig. Very comfortable and well-concealed. I use a VERY relaxed grip, with relaxed and flexed elbows, and with my feet perpendicular to the target. That relaxed grip results in a VERY high muzzle rise (almost vertical), but the recoil is soaked up by inertia of my forearms, and it is very pleasant to shoot that way, even though I use full-spec 240gr JHP Underwoods exclusively.
