S&W Model 686-4 2.5” rarity
Hello I scored a 686-4 2.5” for under $400. I wanted one of the newer ones but the pre-locks hold a special place in my heart. So my question is how rare are these? I see a lot of the newer 686-6 2.5”, but not a lot from other dashes.

The rare part is finding one for $400. Prelock 686's have held their value well over the last year or so when some S&W models have dropped in value. It is not uncommon to see one go on GB for $800+.

It was actually $369 but it needs new grips something fierce. I’ll try and get some pictures whenever it comes in later this week!

686-1 that I paid $500 for. Hate the boot grips, ordered a set of Ahrends like the ones pictured below for it. Should get them around the end of the month.

That’s a dash 1 .. 1986.. $500 was a lot of money 33 years ago! These prices are outrageous. Maybe the sellers were blind or couldn’t see? Those are all gorgeous snubbys! Very nice all of them.

Wow... I bought mine for - $299.95 (12-1996) I carry it half the time. I love mine. But you got a smoking deal. Go out and test fire it just to make sure.

This is my only 686 2.5". It's a "no-dash" and YES, confirmed LEW HORTEN. Picked it up for under $300. O.T.D. at a Gander Mountain some years back.

I don’t know how many Smith made, but my -4 plus is the only one I’ve seen in the wild. I bought it at a gun show for $650 a couple years ago and didn’t realize it was a 7 shot until after I got her home - already having a 2.5” no dash and -3 I just assumed it was a six shooter. $400 is a crazy good price.

My 686-1 had a price of $650 which is low for LGS price. No box or grips, but guns like this never show up locally so I traded for it.
Now I am left to wonder why I have ignored L frames all these years...

My 686-3. Had to put some Hogue grips on. The combats put my middle finger right behind the trigger guard. That knuckle is large and it is painful to shoot. Hogue's fill in that spot and are much more comfy for shooting. And I do love to shoot that snubby!

What pretty snubbies. And the steals y'all got, well, I can only hope such a beast comes my way.
And I really ought to fill the void between my SW64 snubby and my SW696 4".

I love my 686-3 2.5", although at times I find myself wanting a 4" model. My next purchase will either be a 4" 686+ or a 66.

I have a 686-3, 4", with targets that I really like. I bought it to not have to shoot my 27-2. But, for some reason, I can shoot the snubby well. It has become my favorite. To put that into context, I have a steel plate range set up on my property that we shoot often at 20 yds. or less. Defense style shooting.

Unless I'm mistaken, they should be L frame factory combats.
They aren't Culina's or anything like that. If that's what you were thinking. They're RB.
I put a bunch of pictures in this thread: A tale of two snubs...

Actually, I prefer the traditional 6-shots. But then, I am a dinosaur.
I was told that the 686-3 w/ 6 chambers is fairly hard to find........so I nailed
this one about 3 years ago. No way I got it for any $369 however...... so
the OP got a steal, no matter what dash number.
PHOTO below of the 686 Family........686-3 snub, 6-shot is at the Bottom.
Y'all take care, Bo

Lew Horton got the 2-1/2" snubby 686's started back in 1983 by placing a special order with S&W to produce (6000).
It was such a good idea S&W started making them for themselves.

The 7 shot version of the -4 is less common than the 6 shot, but not what I would call rare. They were made for about 2 years before the -5 was released. Either way, you got it at a great price.

tygsmith98,
Excellent purchase and a great price! 2-1/2" 686-4's aren't rare, but many (including myself) consider them the finest variation produced.
Back in 2007, I paid $400 for a used 2-1/2" 686-4 Plus Lew Horton Special and I thought that a great deal at the time! I'm not a big fan of porting on a short barreled revolver, but there were only 50 of these produced according to the SCSW and I couldn't pass it up.

Lots of lovely guns in this thread. OP got an insanely good deal on his new snubbie. Congrats!
The weather here warmed up into the balmy mid thirties today. I took the opportunity to take a couple of photos of my 686-3. Grips are Ahrends cocobolo tacticals, refinished with pure tung oil.

686 357 Mag 6" PP
I have a pre-lock 6" 686. PP, S & W 357 mag. I bought in 2001 new for $599.00 + tax at a local gun store here in Frisco, Tx.
Love the way it shoots! I left the original Hogue rubber grips on it just because I like the way they fit in my hand.
I have seen many shorter barrel 686's on this site but few of the longer barrel ones.
Of all the guns I own this is the one that will be in my drawer when I die!

To the OP, outstanding purchase price. This one cost me $335, new, in late '91 from a SoCal gun store. A dash 3.

Love the 686 OP, that’s a Beauty! My -1 is a Snub, and with the Combats I love the way it looks, like so many posted here. Then last year I got a chance to pick up a -5 Mountain Gun 7-Shot, with the 4”, it’s one of the best shooting revolvers I’ve ever owned. I’m not a great pistol shot, but this one even makes me look like I know what I’m doing. I’ve since changed it to a set of Goodyear’s for better control, been on my hip every day of deer season. With a couple of speed loaders I’m all set.

Nice gun and a wise purchase, but I'll bet you get some strange looks when you tell people where you got it! Could they have picked a worse name?

Love my -3, but had to replace the combats with Hogues for shooting comfort. The back of the trigger guard hurt my knuckle when shooting. The Hogue's fill that area in and eliminate the bite I was getting. I actually shoot this snubby better than I can the 4" I have. Love this revolver!!
