Harry shot "light Specials", usually one-handed. Just sayin'. Also, can't tell from the pic, but I hope you were still chewing a hot dog...

Yep, I think it was in the movie "The Enforcer" that Harry admitted to loading his Model 29 with "light special" ammo. I would presume this would be 44 Special ammo.

IIRC it was ........Magnum Force..... talking to the four young motorcycle cops carrying...... 4 inch, .357 magnum, Colt Pythons.

If you want to do something historically authentic with a 6.5", try hitting an elk size target at 600 yds.

Dirty Harry was supposed to carry a 4" model 29, according to John Milius,
who wrote the film.
Due to low demand, the model was in short supply at the time,
but S&W brought in 2 model 29s with 6.5" barrels, which were used.
Clint Eastwood was presented one of them at conclusion of the film.
After the film hit the market demand was extreme, and buyers were
paying 3 times the market price to get one.
They still create a surge in demand whenever the movie is shown.

I usually shoot the "light 44s" in my model 29, shown below left,
wearing Herrett's Cocobolo stocks.

2nd from left it is shown with my prized Chic Gaylord Combat Speed
Scabbard on a Chic Gaylord belt.

If you were only to get one movie to introduce your 20-something son to the Dirty Harry genre, which one do you choose?

Magnum Force, as BAM-BAM noted. Supposedly a line flub that they went ahead and used.

Dirty Harry -- there really is no other option; the first and the best. Magnum Force should follow; they're thoughtful counterpoints to each other examining the nature of policing and justice, cleverly disguised (and serving well) as police thrillers.

The remaining three, though watchable, descend quickly to rote action flicks.

It's good to see you adding to your 44 collection. Was that the 100 yard steel you were tagging in your video?
Great shooting.

Thanks! I was sighting it in so the targets were around 40 yards. Will take it out to 100+ yards once I get it dialed. Have it pretty close now. Just want to shoot some groups next time out to confirm sight in.

I agree, the original and Magnum Force we're the best, and they degraded from there.

Actually thought Magnum Force could have been titled " The S&W Model 29 vs. the Colt Python".

In an interview I might have seen here long ago, Gun savvy screenwriter/director John Milius said he messed up with that Clint line about the “light specials”. We just watched Magnum Force yesterday again and Clint and Tim Mathison shooting the .44 after that comment shows a gun with heavy recoil.

I bought one of the 4" classics due to lack of 6" guns. I do not care for the skinny Altamont grips they come with.

lol, Other than the classic model 29, they were all cheesy made for TV quality movies. Tried to watch a few over the holidays and had to turn the channel they were so ridiculously stupid. Horrible acting, goofy fake blood, etc, etc...

'Magum Force' & 'The Enforcer' were more fun...'Dirty Harry' is the classic original but in terms of popcorn film fun, I choose the 2nd & 3rd installments.

Correct,Clint was supposed to say "light magnum" as it gives better control than a 357 with wad cutters.

Here's my Dirty Harry .44 Magnum.

Its a 1964 6.5" M29-2. I've had it for about 18 months and have yet to shoot it.

I don't have the numbers but a close friend loaded some "hot" rounds and he smiled when he gave them to me. I hope to shoot it soon.

Ok, fellas, my mistake with thinking the line about light specials was from The Enforcer. It was Magnum Force, the second movie in the Dirty Harry series.

Not even close. Dirty Harry. It was a great film, and he shot Magnums in that movie. He said so twice. The Dirty Harry .44 Magnum

In Magnum Force, he started to get a little soft, and switched to lighter loads.

I watched that scene again and think he meant light Magnum handloads, and maybe only on the range that day. But even then, the recoil and blast suggest .44 Magnum velocities. Look at the reactions of people that Harry shot.

The whole point of the .44 Magnum was to appeal to the psychological reactions of the macho filmgoers who liked marvelling at that raw power. I bet a bunch of them also like hot sports cars. And big motorcycles.

For whatever it is worth, I haven't and won't run anything other than 44 magnum loads through my model 29 and 629's. To me it is a matter of principal.

Nice! I got my 6.5" 29-2 a couple years ago and to my surprise she was born in 1973 which was when Magnum Force came about and also the year I was born.Oh so Happy.

I don't think I've ever seen but the two originals, but I think Magnum Force was the better of those two.

It's close mind you.

Thank you.

I don't have a birth year gun but if I ever decide to find one it will be a 1954 4" M28.

I'm the same way with my .357 mags and my .41 mag.

I've yet to shoot my 29-2 but the only ammo I have for it is .44 Magnums.

None of those are full power. Full power is Underwoods.

Um, congratulations?

I shoot magnums and specials from my 629 ... both fit, both go boom. One just booms bigger than the other. Both make me smile.

Congrats on your purchased. I have a nib m29-10 that’s still upshot. As part of s&w history n frames rock.

Ok we squeezed another Rambo movie Rambo last blood from Stallone how about another Dirty Harry movie from Eastwood? Or a spaghetti western too? Maybe Eastwood’s son? Son of Dirty Harry?

I'm not sure how anyone can shoot the 180-gr Remington's and not consider them "full power".

Yes! 1610 fps & 1036 ft.-lbs. is pretty stout to me. I also love the fireballs they throw. The pic in my original post is of me firing the 180 grain Remington UMCs.

I think I read that a guy in Africa killed a zebra with 180's.

I prefer 240-250 grain bullets.

Magnum Force screenwriter John Milius in the audio commentary that the "light Special" line was in fact misinterpreted by the cast and crew and actually meant he used a specially prepared lighter Magnum load.

For me, only a genu-wine Model 29-2 will do to replicate the original Dirty Harry gun!

I wouldn't say he did, but somebody prolly made him a 200gr. hollow point @ 1,200 fps.

BTW, I just checked and Speer no longer makes their short bbl .44 magnum load.
