Default Culina Grips

Just installed a set of Culina grips on my SW PC 44 mag Light Hunter. They feel much better than the round butt factory grips. They fit perfectly.

Those are a HUGE improvement over the Altamont combats. What wood is that?

Welcome to the slippery slope of Culina Grip addiction!!!! They look and feel so good you want to put them on every S&W revolver you own.

I actually spoke to the guy at Smith & Wesson who claimed credit for getting S&W to make all revolvers round butt. This was 30 years ago and I don't remember why I was speaking with him. I understand the manufacturing savings the company achieves, but on heavy N and X frames guns square butt shaped stocks are much better.

The wood is Purple Heart and they are better looking in person than the picture shows. I'm thinking about a set for my SW 460 mag with 5 inch barrel. I primarily use the 460 for range/fun work with a somewhat lighter load - 45 grains of H110 running around 2000 fps with a Hornady 240 grain XTP mag.

The current round butt configuration is why Rd To Sq conversion grips are so popular. Especially in larger models.

cladd1, another wood that looks fantastic on a stainless steel gun is Italian Olive. If John has some of that wood left, you might think of putting a set of them on your 460. Here is a dirty pic of my 629-3 Classic wearing a set of round to square conversions in Italian Olive.

In my opinion, Culina N Round to Square Conversion grips are the ONLY way to go on long barrel/heavy barrel Round Butt N-Frame. I particularly have a fancy for the Combat Conversion grips.

I bought Italian olives to put on a M66. I just never got around to buying the gun, so they sit now on a 15-2

I agree. Interestingly, Altamont uses olive wood for their Ropers. It’s definitely looks nice on blue and stainless.

OP, your Culinas are beautiful!

I am anxiously awaiting to join this cult. I'll have pictures about mid-February. They are great people to deal with.

Adios,

Congratulations to some really outstanding Culina-Stocks. Besides Keith Brown, John Culina is king of the hill within the stock manufacturer space!

I do currently have the chance to upgrade my M66-1 Snubby with some Culina Combat walnut stocks.
As I live in Germany I would like to clarify all details in advance as sending back the stocks in case they do not fulfill my exspectations is not an option (shipping costs are estimated 50 USD one way and I also have to pay custom fees).

So I have one question you may answer: Are the left and the right grip made out of the same piece of wood?
The edges of the combat grips touch seamlessly at the front of grip when they are mounted correctly (in contrast to the back of the grip where steelframe is in between).
Coming to the core of my question - Walnut shows a very nice figure with many shades and lines (which makes it so desirable). Do these lines and shades have to match at seperating line of the two grips or is it o.k. if you can see at first glance that it is not a Monogrip?
I am non-mothertongue so I hope I could explain clearly what I am talking about.

Thank you for your valuable advice.

Kind regards
Frederik

Just spoke with Jennifer recently. They are gearing up, and taking names, for a run of K/L RB walnut grips.

No finer grips out there.

What kind of walnut?. I have been on a list for months, but I do not like round butt guns. I will have to check with her. I am not looking for straight grained American Walnut. I am looking for English, Turkish , circassian with black line figuring. I think the Culinas call it marble cake

If you aren't dead set on Culinas, I know how you can speed things up and also be able to choose your own piece of wood. PM me for details.

Here's a set John made for a Model 586 I once owned. They felt as good as they look.
