S&W 10-8 take cash or trade?
This seems like an easy question. But there is more than meets the eye.. Its a trade deal.
Take the cash, $400, or make a trade for a pristine model 10-8 , 4” HB circa 1983? ( hammer firing pin but not a pinned barrel)
The trade includes original magnas and extra set of nice wood target grips. Looks like Altamont or similar quality.
What would you do?
Assume you don’t need the money to pay bills etc.
Also trade is for a shotgun I don’t want or need. $400 is a good cash price.

Shotgun is worth $400! Plus or minus $25
That’s what I’m selling it for.
The 10-8 I’m not sure.. that why the question. I think it’s hard to find any decent revolver for under $400. That’s my observation.
Just looking for what you all all think? Pristine 10-8 HB 2 sets of wood grips. Worth $400?
And who would trade and who would take cash? Why?

Well I traded an old Win. 52 slow lock for a like new 10-8 with a 100 rds. of new ammo. The 52 was in great mechanical condition with one original 5 shot magazine, but the bluing was just about gone and the stock was not original (it was a Bishop).
At times I wish I hadn't traded, but when I shoot the 10-8 I'm happy I did.
This is the 52 I traded:
and this is the 10-8 I got for it:
I really don't know if I took a loss on the trade or if i broke even or came out ahead. But if you want that 10-8 then do the trade and be happy.

Shotguns are plentiful and easily replaced. Pre-lock s@w’s are desirable, easy to store and good trade bait for future wants. I would take the trade.

I'd only trade for something I really wanted or needed.....Why take a gun in trade that you may never use.......or don't really want!
Trading fodder??? Well someone's got to want what you have or a gunshop will give you 50-60% of its retail/resale value.

My rule is: "Never pass on any reasonably priced S&W revolver".
That's reasonably priced.

The only thing that would make that deal sweeter would be a 3". I'd be on it.

That piece looks much nicer than the average model 10 which are often beat up police trade ins. Shotguns are worth next to nothing at pawn shops. I say go for it.

Is the person that is willing to purchase or trade known to you? After a friend got burned by purchasing a Sig from a reputable shop that eventually was identified as being stolen in California, I would be extremely cautious.
Just like some people, you don't know what kind of history comes with a private party firearm. Me, personally, I wouldn't purchase or trade for any USED firearm unless an FFL is involved. At least that way, theoretically, you can be assured that it isn't stolen. Until a ballistics comparison is done, you wouldn't know if it was fired in a criminal act.
Don't get me wrong, I would like to trust people, but the stakes seem to get higher every day. Unless I know the handgun's owner, I'd pass.

That's a fairly even trade if the 10-8 is in the condition described. I'd do it, but I'm weak around heavy barreled K-frames.
Do you have use for the 10? If not, take the cash and put it toward something you do have a use for.

There are millions of M&P 38/Model 10s out in the market place
There does not appear to be anything special or unique about this Model 10, nothing that draws you to it more than any other M&P 38/Model 10 or you would have already made the trade
$400 may be a fair deal, but it is not a spectacular one
If the trade is not something that really speaks to me or a spectacular deal, I would take the cash
Then use the cash toward something that get's my motor running

I would take the cash because I already own a nice 10-7 and a .38 m&p, $400 can help fill in other wants and desires.

What’s the shotgun, Is it a SxS? If you don’t have a hankering for the model 10, save the money in case you find something that really hits your fancy. Could you sell the model 10 for 400.00 or more. Almost seems like another gun to try & sell down the road cause it’s in the way. Larry

Yes I know and trust this seller. But he may not be original owner.
You have interesting take on FFL purchases. I understand your caution but you are incorrect in thinking that a firearm purchased from an FFL guarantees you are not purchasing a stolen firearm. FFLs do not check used guns they take into inventory. At least in Ohio.
I purchased a stolen S&W 1076 that was later confiscated. But not before the FFL in NC shipped it, the FFL in Ohio accepted it and transferred it to me. Then it eventually got flagged as stolen (3-4 weeks after I had it in my safe). That is only because a Pawn shop (at least in NC) is required to supply local police with a record of every firearm they take in for transfer or for pawn. When the police eventually got around to running the numbers it flagged as stolen 20 years earlier from an FBI agent. Who knows how many collectors owned that gun and how many FFLs it transferred through in those 20 years. It would have never been caught if the transferee had not used a pawn shop as his transferring FFL. The transferee is also a S&W collector and forum contributor with an upstanding reputation. There is always more to a story but I will stop here. Needless to say any used firearm sold in this state 'could" be stolen.
