Default S&W Dilemmas - what to get next?

I don't really need anymore S&W's but that "want" button is still being triggered in my head. I'm a Collector and Target Shooter in Australia. Here are a couple of guns advertised locally that I wouldn't mind taking a look at. Don't have the cash for all.

1. Model 620 - despite already having a 4" Model 66 and 686, there's one for sale locally and the price seems relatively good. Are they that rare and as accurate as everyone says they are?

2. Model 29 - Despite also having two other N Frames, I'm yet to get a .44 mag. My dealer has two coming in; 6.5" and 4". At the moment, I could only put these on my Australia Post 46 Collectors licence.

3. Model 10 - I feel the need to get a 4" model 10. I already have a 2" RB, 2" SB, and 3" SB.

4. Model 67 - I already have a model 15-2. Do I really need the Stainless Steel version?

5. Model 14 - I've been in discussion with my gunsmith about getting a Model 14 and turning it into a competitive ISSF Centrefire Pistol (similar to Bullseye). This would probably be the more practical choice of all the opinions and would get the greater use.

6. Not to mention I am already going to take a look at a nice Colt Cobra 1st Issue as well as trying to save my pennies for a new Colt Python when the hype as died down (as well as the price; currently being advertised as a pre-order for just over $3000 AUD or equivalent to $2060 USD.............you think you're being ripped off at MSRP of $1500 USD).

So my mind is all over the place at the moment. The Model 14 Centrefire Match project gun is the most sensible but my wife says I have none of that anyway (lol). Plus Model 14's are quite easy to come by compared with the other guns listed.

Any advice would be appreciated.

You only live once. Limit yourself no more than you must considering the welfare of your family, and, of course, the ability to pay your taxes.

Exactly. And in my situation, I am running out of life fast. Unfortunately, I am running out of money even faster.

The good news is that everything I really need is already in the collection. So just about everything from here on out will be about refining... not necessarily expanding... the collection.

It kinda sounds like you are in the same mode and are thinking about the right kinds of things.

But like yourself, I may make an exception to my refinement strategy IF Colt ever comes out with a blued version of the new Python AND my anti-2A overloads here in MA USA allow me to buy one.

I'm looking for a 14-5 myself. Full lug.
A working 14 really appeals to me.

All good choices for sure. I'd be looking at the 29s but I'm kinda partial to 44s anyways.

I would go with the .44 Magnum. With a nice handload they are just plain fun to shoot.

My choice would either be 29 or 14 and I would lean a bit more towards the 14. All the 14s I have are superb shooters and see the range more then anything in my collection with the 15s being runner ups.

I’d get the m29 and the m14. Get both. I only like n frames and k frame s&w.

Default The choice is quite simple!

First consideration: Wife's approval.

Second consideration: Buy the gun whose price matches the available funds!

Then start the savings again for the next one.

Alternative: Buy the TWO you really want, and put the outstanding balance on a credit card.

I have very little trouble spending some one else's gun money. Wait, I don't have any trouble spending my gun money.

Can’t go wrong with a Model 14, the Model 67 is nice too. I have both. Nice as they are I can’t imagine not having a 4” Model 10. I got my police surplus 4” 10-5 when I was 18 and learned to shoot double action with it. My preference is for the taper barrel, but any Model 10 is worth having.

Get a Ruger Redhawk 44mag. I much prefer it over my S&W M29-2.

I've got a vintage Ruger Redhawk .44 Magnum, the one that the barrel that flies off downrange when you shoot it. Very exciting! Unfortunately, you only get to shoot it once before it is ruined... ... so I haven't had the pleasure yet.

Thanks for your advice. I picked up a Model 10-5 tapered barrel as well as the Model 67-1. The model 29's were too far out of my price range for a well used gun.

Following on from my last post, a model 14 will be my next purchase so I can get it all set up for competition later on in the year.

Every collector of S&W firearms should have at least one M29 in their collection.

So my mind is all over the place at the moment. The Model 14 Centrefire Match project gun is the most sensible but my wife says I have none of that anyway (lol). Plus Model 14's are quite easy to come by compared with the other guns listed.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Why would you want to start with a Model 14?

You are planning on a custom barrel and sights, correct?

Are you going to use a Bomar or Aristocrat rib or something similar? If yes, then why not start with a Model 10?

If you are plan to use adjustable sights that fit the S&W screw holes, then you could use a 14 or a 15 if you are changing barrels anyway.

This bothers me. Not necessarily in a bad way, but in an inquisitive way. While I consider myself a collector of Smith & Wessons going way back to the 70's, I've never really been much for N-frames. One of the first guns I ever bought was a 4" Highway Patrolman, but I sold it after I discovered K-frames which made more sense to me. In fact, the only N-frames I own right now are dear old Dad's 6" early Highway Patrolman and a still NIB Model 520. That's it! I did have an opportunity to score a Model 27 at a very good price once, but the good wife nixed it. Most of the time, nice vintage N-frames are too expensive for me to even consider, let alone get by the good wife's approval process.

But now I am an old man with one foot in the grave and I read this. It makes me feel like I've missed out on something that I pride myself in being a part of. Where did I go wrong? And is it too late to correct course? Or am I priced out now and for all time?

I checked. Vintage Model 29's do not grow on trees, nor to they come cheap. For now, I'll just have to wonder about what I missed... about what could have been. But I'll add a Model 29 to my bucket list anyway. You never know. I could win the lottery tomorrow... who knows?

At this stage, I was just going to get a trigger job done on it (1000 gram trigger requirement for ISSF Centrefire), leave the barrel as is, and get some ergo Grips for it (eg NILLS Grips). The sights would probably stay the same. Maybe upgrade to LPAs if required.
