Default 66-2 2.5"

Bought this guy the udder day. 66-2 In pretty nice shape Made in '87. Came with orig grips which is getting pretty rare these days. No flame cutting. Has Dept. or Agency ser# rollmarked under sideplate. If anybody has a similarly marked gun (placement, font, ser# length) and has an idea of where it came from please post info. I know it's a stretch figuring it out. Probably was issued to Peruvian mounted Llama corps..

Peruvian mounted Llama coprs....that there is funny....

I haven't seen another marked that way, seems a newer method than what was available when the -2 was being manufactured....is it laser etched?

That's a fine 66 either way. My first S&W was a 66-2

It does appear to be laser etched, barely breaks the surface. I removed some scratches from the upper sideplate. I'm getting fairly good at using Scotch brite on stainless. I'm tempted to remove the number.

That gun came for the Georgia Public Safety Training Center Police department in Forsyth GA. This was right before the transition to autos. State Patrol was getting 4 inch 66's, the GBI had our 2 1/2 inch 66's, Corrections had 4 inch 65's. GSP went to 4506 or 5906-Trooper's choice; GBI went to 469s in 9mm; Corrections stayed with 65s. Many of these traded guns wound up in Forsyth at the Training center. Some , obviously not yours, were used in training, others issued to staff. When THESE revolvers were traded in, Clyde Armory in Athens GA bought many of them. What you have there, I can say with 100% certainty, is a gun that was bought new by the State of Georgia for issue to a GBI agent. Hope this helps and is not boring!

Boring? QUITE THE OPPOSITE!

This is more info than I ever expected. I certainly appreciate your taking the time to respond to my post. I'm going to leave the number on the gun since I now have the background you provided. Considering the myriad of possibilities what are chances that someone would know where it came from?

st regis, I can't thank you enough.

Want to know info and background on S&W firearms, this forum with it's members is the place to go
