Default When did S&W Stop stamping stocks

About what year did they stop stamping the serial number on the inside of the right stock?
Did it vary from model to model?
Or from one frame size to another?

My guess would be somewhere in the mid to late 1970s... The serial numbers changed in 1981/2 area with the three letter prefix and never recall seeing a serial number like that on any stock...

I also have always wondered why S&W only stamped "SERVICE" stocks and not Targets. If you bought a 15 back in the 1960s the serial number was stamped into the stock..buy a 19 with Target stocks and it wasn't...

Service and magnas were ground on the frame to fit. They were serial numbered to be kept with the frame. Target stocks are oversized and did not need to be ground on the frame to fit.

So a 1973 K-frame would still have come with the SN stamped inside the right grip panel. That agrees with what I've seen elsewhere. Thanks.

I would have to disagree with that. Target grips needed to be shaped to the backstrap as well as where the met together in the front and the butt ends.

Service stocks were number stamped (and therefore fitted) until about 1980, and possibly a little after, from observation.

And Target stocks were universal fit. They were sometimes numbered (presumably fitted) for a brief period in the mid-1950s but the practice stopped quickly.
