624 Grips
Somehow a Model 624, in spite of my best efforts, followed me home. It is a no dash with a serial number from late 85', AHB9XXX.
I have read all the recall information. This one came without a box and wears a set of Altamonts. What grips were on these when they left the mothership?
I hope this model is a great as all of the references and threads claim!

Square butt checkered Target Stocks with the speedloader cutout on the 4-inch and 6-1/2-inch models.
Round-butt smooth fingergroove Combat Stocks of Goncalo Alves wood on the 3-incher.

It is a factory, unaltered piece. I suspect that it came with round butt combats but, wanted to check.

I believe a 4 inch 624 with a round butt grip frame would be an oddity from the factory at that time. Maybe a barrel swap?

A round-butt 4-inch Model 624 was never a catalogued item, nor have I ever seen one or heard about one anecdotally. It could be a special order but I don't think the factory was taking single gun orders back then. Much more likely to be a barrel swap, as barrels of all three lengths were available for a time back when these guns were available.

Either this is one is so rare that it is the first to cross this forum or that 624 has been customized by swapping barrels or cutting metal off its grip frame. Most likely the later. Are the serrations gone off the lower part of its front strap and back strap?
Assuming it's a customized gun which is nearly certain, there is no point in paying $250 for a set of Combat stocks that do not match what was on it originally. Combat Stocks are among the best looking, most photogenic and, on this forum, the most prestigious stocks but for shooting they suck.

For a mere $250 $350 you can put original combats back on her.

I'm thinking Occam's razor here. How about a picture with the grips removed , or, at the least, looking at the gun from behind. I'm betting that it is a Square Butt.
Adios,

Gentlemen,
there is another round butted 624 in this forum.
I had it round butted by a competent German gunsmith years ago. But I admit, I never heard of a 624 4" that left the factory with a round butt. BTW: # is AHB 0xxx
@k22fan
you are right, combat stocks suck for shooting. Meanwhile I swapped the Ahrends Retro Banana for some Hogue Cocobolo RB conversion without finger grooves. Way better for shooting.
regards from Germany

The first photo shows the 624 and my 629-5 for comparison. The remaining photos are of the 624's butt, sans the grips.

The smooth backstrap on your 4-inch Model 24 would indicate that the butt was originally square but has been round-butted. The grooved backstrap has been smoothed to resemble the backstrap of a model 10 or 64, all of which are also smooth (whether round or square).
Whoever did the work did a very nice job. Though modified from factory, that is still a great example!

With the round butt or combat grips I have to agree about their usefulness.Altamont makes a set of grips that they call round butt to square butt. I long for a set for my blued 24-3. I stopped at three S&W 44 specials. Kept getting snake eyes from my wife. She started going to the gun shows as I was spending too much money on the three 44 specials. But at the time she developed an interest in hematite jewerly and couldn't be in two places at once. She did make it back just as we completed the 4473 and I paid the dealer the $750 for the 3" with combat grips. Very, very quiet ride back home. Frank

In spite of the probability of being "round butted" after leaving the factory, it is a keeper. Now to load up that new Starline, .44 special brass!
Thank you all for your time and input regarding this 624!

be aware: those chamber throads might be laaarge. my 624 wasn't too accurate with .429/.430 diameter lead bullets. .432 works best.

I just got this 624 (no dash) made on 1985. My grips may or may not be original, but I like them better than the Factory target or combat grips.
