Current 63's
How are the latest 63's with the 3 inch barrels performing? Thinking about purchasing one to carry on my woods walks. Not interested in anything lighter.

I bought a 4 inch 617 and a 63 at the same time, sold the 63 after shooting it a few times. It has a place I guess, but the 617 10 shot was heavier, easier to hold on target, and more enjoyable to shoot, IMHO.

I have a 6" 617 and a 3" 63. I like them both, although they are different animals. The 63 is more challenging.

I bought a 63 about a year and a half ago, I use it for woods (swamp) prowling and general plinking. It has worked out fine for me, I like the SS material and the 3" length, I have a belt holster for it but usually carry it in a pocket holster.

If you are going to carry it more than shoot it, the little 63 is quite attractive. For target shooting, it might leave something to be desired, but that's not what you are getting this one for, is it? Be sure and take care of any extraction issues sooner rather than later and from there on you are likely to have a faithful and dependable companion. What more could you ask for?

I expected a small frame rimfire to not have a great trigger so I was delighted to find that mine does, both ways.
I have shot thousands of rounds out of mine without a glitch or any maintenance other than routine cleaning.

My arsenal already includes a 4 and 6 inch 617 as well as a 4 inch Ruger SP101. I tried a 317 and could not master it. The 63 seems like a decent compromise between the 617 and 317. Occasionally I'll carry a Beretta Bobcat but would like something with adjustable sights.
Killing small critters and plinking under 15 yards will be its mission.

I had a 4” square butt 63 and the newer 3” 63-5. I never did like the square butt and sold it. The 3” is a great revolver for what it is. My 617-1 is easier to shoot and has a better trigger but that’s to be expected. If you want a J-frame .22LR I’d go with the 3” 63-5.

Found a good buy on a new one on Gunbrokers. Should be here in a week or so. Hope it fits inside my jacket pocket. Plan on trying it with some CCI mini mags as they work well for me.
Thanks for the posts.

I have several 17's, a 18 and a 4" 617, along with a 63 that is about two years old. I constantly carry it when I am working at the cabin or at our archery range and never even notice it is on my hip. Perfect gun for when I am on the tractor. I carry it in a high ride pancake holster. My other Smith .22's are better range guns but I think the 3" 63 is a great constant companion woods gun. I hardly ever go out that I don't shoot a cylinder or two through it.
I was hoping that Stingers or something similar would shoot good through it but that didn't prove to be the case. I shot about 25 different makes and loads of .22's through it, some with dismal results... 10" at 20 yards. C.C.I. mini mags shot good but I picked up a couple of boxes of the new Mini Mag segmented hollow point. Once I adjusted the sights it consistently shoots a 2-3" group in the black at 20 yards. I went back and bought two sleeves of the same lot number!
I was a little disappointed when I first got it in as accuracy with anything I shot through it wasn't what I would call acceptable. But, after 500 or so rounds, it settled in and has really become a decent shooter. I guess everything just needed to get broken in and settled down.

This thread had me looking at what I own . . . I have more 22 Revolvers that I realized
I really like the look of the eight-shot, 3" Model 63.
I have no need for another 22 revolver, but early this year there was a GB auction that had a low first bid, so I bid.
7 or 8 days later I got the notification that I won. SoI paid for it, had it shipped and took it home
I really like it. I have several 2" 34s, but they are not eight-shot, so I find myself dropping it in my pocket often
As I expected, the single-action trigger is great and the double-action trigger is heavy. I have no problems with that, it is a J-frame.
Mine has been accurate and reliable. I just need to do something about those grips
Perhaps a set of Culinas
