J Frame Combats
As so many have done (see how I made sure the blame was spread evenly?), I picked up a set of J Frame Combats on E-Bay.
To my eye they’re beautiful, with a tiny imperfection in the wood where a small knothole once resided. I’m told they are S&W factory combats, but I defer to the experts here, since you could write all I know about them on the inside of one grip, and still have room for a Tom Clancy novel.
In any case I like the way they look, I either got a great deal on these, or paid more than fakes are worth. Either way, now I gotta buy a gun to put them on, all my J Frames are already dressed...and so it begins.

Looks legit to me... very few non-factory (if any) have the metal "washers" on the underside like that.
Factory combats on my 432PD.

Good eye... also at second glance, I noticed that the left grip has had the palm swell flattened.
Still, very serviceable... OP, what kind of price were they?

I got them for $127 plus shipping, $135 when the smoke cleared. As I said, if they are factory I’m a happy guy!

J Combats
I don't believe those grips have been altered. IMHO they are box stock S&W

Thank you jcelect! Your new in the package set confirms these are original (at least to my old eyes).
At about half price, (most I’ve seen sell for $250-300). I’m very happy with this buy.
They’re stamped 2 82 on the left grip, is this the manufacture or ship date? Or just some random code S&W used? Handwritten 435 inside the right panel.

Nice score. I like the way the combats fit my hand as well. I put a set on this 642.

Nice score on those j-frame combat stocks. Glad you like them!
Concerning S&W's original versions of factory combat grips, I like all of them EXCEPT those for the j-frame because they cover the backstrap. I much prefer S&W's Target stocks for j-frame round butts as they leave the backstrap fully exposed.
I get that many would like the feel of the j-frame combats because of their larger size on S&W's smallest frame. They are just not right for me.

I have a pair just like them on my model 60. I picked them up at the Des Moines gunshow several years back and they are about the most comfortable grips I have owned for a J-frame revolver.

They look great.
I have combats on my J-frame and I think they are perfect for this gun. This one is a 640-1.
I have combats for K and N frames too but thinking about selling them.

Forgot I had two of these little guys. A few years ago you couldn’t run fast enough to give me one, but they grow on you. Love these little 49’s now. Been trying to find a 649 in 357, but the prices on those seem to keep going up. Maybe I should just get a 38 for triplets?
On to the point, my new (to me) Combats feel great on this one!

The square butt version works for both square butt j-frames AND round butts, whereas the round butt version fits round butts only.
