I have an M&P 340 that I have been carrying for several years. It has received some minor wear on the edges, end of the barrel and a small scratch on the cylinder with carry and use.
Today I did a major dummy move. I tucked it into my waistband in a pocket holster just running to get the mail down town. When I exited the car, before I had a chance to remove it before entering the PO, it fell out in the street along with the holster. It got a slight ding on the right top, rear edge of the frame. Has anyone sent one of these or one similar back to the mother ship for refinish and if so do they take out such a scratch when refinishing so that it comes back looking like new. I would guess that the big dot night sight should be replaced also due to age. ???

just a heads up for ccw carriers. post office property is off limits, parking lot and all. be safe out there....dan

It's a carry piece; if the ding doesn't affect function, why fix? Besides, you generally don't want to re-anodize a piece; anodizing bonds beneath the surface layer of the aluminum and stripping for a refinish removes that layer of metal, too.

So long as the 340's working properly, call it character and carry on...

sw dan, not sure what you were inferring. I said that I had exited my vehicle and was going to remove the firearm prior to entering the PO when it fell out in the street, causing the damage. I know the law, I am a retired Chief of Police.

I've used Birchwood Cassey Aluma-black to touch up finish wear on the edges of my 340. You may want to give that a try.

I think he's trying to tell you that even having the firearm in or around your person in the P.O. parking lot is verboten.

(I have no dog in this fight, Chief, just stating what I think he's getting at.)

So as I understand the law, there isn't a problem because a city street isn't PO property.

Parking on a city street and disarming is exactly what you should do when going to the PO.

As to the topic at hand, I have a few Airweight guns with shiny spots due to holster wear. IMO, unless wear is really bad, it's a losing battle to have it refinished.

Keeping a carry weapon looking perfect won't happen. It will just get worn again.

Thanks for the info. I am just sort of anal about my guns looking good. As to the PO issue, yes I was parked across the street not in the PO lot at the time.

We have installed several Big Dot sights but have never removed one that is pinned on. From watching the instructions online about the Ruger LCR Big Dot (it is pinned on) I think a person with average handi"person" skills and a few correct tools could replace the M&P 340 sight themselves.

Sometimes trying to lessen the appearance of dings on the frame leaves a polished look that is more noticeable than the dings. Sometimes you can lessen the polished look by placing sandpaper or emery cloth on the spot and gently tapping on it to gently give a matte look to the frame then, As suggested Aluma Black or other such product could be tried.

I don't like sending anything back unless it is broken or a valuable finish restoration.

I can't even get S&W to arrange a return for my 360SC that the frame wore down on to the point that the cylinder will travel rearward out of the gun when trying to reload. I'd be wary about sending anything in for a finish issue.
