Nice find, and great pictures. Not sure if they all shipped in 1981 but they were probably all made that year. I found one recently too (N866129) which was confirmed to have shipped in September of 1981.

Look like Goncalo Alves?
I’ve had this ND for 20 years.

Holy moly! That's a beauty. I have a P & R 6" and 8 3/8"er but have never run across a 4"er. I don't know if the wood is rose wood or goncalo alves but those presentations look great. Congrats and enjoy!

The 629 (no dash) is the SS version of the 29-2,
It is unique as the first SS SW .44 Magnum and only P&R version ever made.
On the down side the rumour is a reputation of having soft yoke metal ( my friends 4" had that problem).
The 629 is becoming very collectable in high condition ,
Imo the best version for durability is the 629-3 or dash 4 which adds the endurance package and is drilled tapped for scope mounting.
Not sure of the stock material but the plain looking orange wood is very common for that era ,
I have heard people jokingly refer to it as "Pallet wood" .
Another feature in that era of N target stocks is the heel area got considerably larger and more square, my guess is it speeded production.
On a side note I recall buying SW's back then and quickly replacing the wood with Pachmayer rubber as factory wood stocks were not envogue pre internet.
At that time many gunshops had a box of factory takeoffs at the register for $5 a pair and the majority of those shops did not know what "Cokes" were .

That would go nicely with my 1981 Model 19-4 nickel and 1976 Model 66!

I have a -4 that I will shoot more than this gun. For this one I will shoot moderate handloads and avoid full-house loads.

My 4" 629 isn't pinned or recessed but the bullets don't seem to care.

The recessed cylinder is one of the alluring reasons we look for these. The recessed cylinder went away shorty after the 629 was introduced.

I noticed that the main spring and bolt plunger appear to be stainless, or silver/grey in color anyway. They are also stamped with an S. Is that the same for you other 629 ND owners?
