Default Lecture of the day:

There are a lot of optimists out there doing us favors by selling us overpriced used guns of possibly questionable condition, when the same guns can be purchased new for not much more $. Lecture over.

my limited experience considered, the new 686+ i saw yesterday had burrs everywhere in the cylinder lugs, a missing chunk from the extraction star, and feels half as smooth as any of the 90's and younger model. Similar nasty machine marks and burrs on a new model 66's i've picked up too. "satin stainless" doesnt hit me like the old finishes either.

That said, I guess you can buy overpriced(*) guns of questionable quality new OR used

I agree that flame cut is nothing, barely started. On the other hand it looks like it has been polished, it should be satin stainless, not bright stainless like that.

Good pickup for 700, I'd say!
What really matters is that you're excited about it and have some good times ahead, as you learn more about it, learn to shoot it well, and visit this forum to chat about awesome revolvers!

I think you got a gun you will enjoy for many years to come. Can't go wrong with a 686 unless it has been thrashed. Yours looks good from here.

I would venture to say that Lew Horton is who we have to thank for sub nosed 586/686 revolvers

That run of product code 104212 back in 1984 were the first production L-frame snubbies

Product Code 104212 was a run of normal production guns with shorter barrels, these did not go through the Performance Center or get any additional work

Even though mine was also made in 1984, I have only had it since 1995. The grips have been changed since it left the factory

Gotta like someone who buys multiples of a certain gun simply because he likes it! I've done likewise with J-frames, my rationale being they're small so there's room for duplicates!

Range report: excellent. Good groups with several .38 and .357 loads. Sorry, no pics.

Default Id pass

For a house/truck gun Id more be lookin for a 3 7 shooter. For a target/hunting itd be a 5-6. I do love 686s and 66s. I let others wet their pants over 3 whatevers. Took me a 36, 65 and a 66 to figure out their not for me. 3 and six shooters too big for concealment too short for target and hunting. For a house and truck gun fine.

Thumbs up

2A, I've been a fan of the L-frames since shortly after they were introduced, carried one every working day for several years. FWIW, I had a 2 1/2" 686. Short barrel, but still a big gun. I think you made the right choice in the 4" gun, over an overpriced, possibly out of time snubby.

And I wouldn't worry about that flame cutting on the top strap one bit....

No, I dont think so.

I finally bought a set of round targets. Everything you see with 2.5 686 is combats. Did any ever come with round targets?

Round or square, target stocks fit my small hands best.
This set of stocks have couple dings to the checkering, so they match the slightly used look of the gun.
