Default I FELL HARD for a 2.5" 686 I need to know: Is she the one?

I couldn't stop oogling, and fondling her. I was so overwhelmed with passion, i forgot to even take a photo!

But, there is hope! I have a date to see her again on Saturday!

So , I'm hoping I can get some advice on specifics to check that its legitimate, or hasn't been molested by another dirty birdy.
Maybe a few kind hearted folks become invested and subscribed, so that when I post pics on Saturday AM I can have quick access to your valuable insights, and see this lovely gal yourselves.

Here's what I can tell you now.
Its purported to be a 686 "Lew Horton" 2.5" with the rounded combat grips.

It is indeed marked " 686 " no dash. Also a no box, no papers
Serial is " ANA54XX "

Overall condition shiny and crispy, but used certainly. No glaring damage seen

The grips looked good, I cant recall if the emblem was brass or silver style.
Function seemed fine, though I'm ignorant for the most part. Buttery smooth at least

I was mostly ignorant at the time, as it was just random love at first sight, so unfortunately I didn't pay much attention to hammer/trigger details, sights, straps etc., though in hindsight they seemed in order

Thanks in advance for any help! I haven't contributed yet, but I hope to return the favor in the forums
Here's a Google image that seems identical to the Siren calling my name

Man, you got it bad.

Lew Horton Distributors just went out of business. They used to provide information on special edition firearms marketed and sold by them (I believe toward the end there was a small fee for documentation). A letter of authenticity from the SWHF would now be the only way to find out from where your soon-to-be 686 was shipped.

Mine is -1, no original grips, but not bad shape at all.

I didnít know it was the one. I saw it many times at my LGS, but never held it. Then one day I asked to touch it, even though itís not a K frame.
Well it came home with me. But the real surprise was the first time I shot it. That is better than guns I have owned for years. I canít explain it, but I shoot this one better in DA than I do others in SA.

It sense no make me, but this one will be with me till the end.

I think it deserves a set of Grasshorns one of these days.

If they are the RB L frame combats, they should have silver emblems.
Here are the twins. My 686 is a dash 3. The 586 is a dash 4. ....

Those are some nice looking fat bottomed girls you have there, @Louthewelder. I'm jealous. Thanks for the emblem tip. You say silver emblems for "RB L" but I cant figure what that means

I think you sound hooked! All I can say is that their isn't a handgun much sexier than a 2 1/2 inch bbl 686 with factory combat grips on it, and they are sweet shooters too. Just take your time and check it over real good, and then be sure to give us pictures if you bring it home with you.

RB= round butt
L= L frame (size of frame)

You'll get used to the abbreviations. Sorry about that. Basically an L frame is a large frame.

Are those Ahrend grips? What wood type is that? Very beautiful gun. I love mine.

Ahhh the sirens have called you to the rocky shore. Sounds like your ship is already being dashed against the rocks and your mast is about to crash into the frothy seas sinking your wallet into the abyss.
Or more simply put, FISH ON!!!

Mine's a 686-4 and I absolutely love. Got her for a whopping $369 shipped a few weeks ago! No barrel end shake and perfect timing. Although I believe she needs some ahrend grips, but the pachmayr's do a fine job right now. I personally like the scuffs and scratches, mainly because it doesn't make me feel so bad CC'ing it!

Pretty, but not wide enough at the shoulder for my little hands. I need a little more up top like factory target stocks.
But these work for now.

I just canít get over how well I shoot this.

I know what you mean. I shoot my 686-4+ snub better than most longer barreled guns I own. It's kinda weird actually.

I shot both of mine very well, but I liked the 4Ē better.
Always wanted to pick up a 6Ē but never got around to it.

Also a few 3" 586s I had one in the 90s..... didn't really fill a need at the time so it got traded away for a Preference Center Shorty-9.

To me a 4" 686 is the perfect utility/duty/general purpose .357...... but for concealed carry a 3" 66 or 65 is better IMO than a short barreled L-frame.

OK "better" might not be the right word...... "easier to carry" might be a better description of why I chose a K frame over the L 99% of the time when I had both.

Good luck..... she may be the one for you!!!!!

Are you sure that's a -4? Looks like a -3 or earlier due to the flash chromed hammer and trigger. Just wondering...

My lone 686 Lew Horton to contribute. I confirmed it with Mr. Minot about three years back. Letter never arrived though and I forgot about it. One of my "don't sell" L frames.

Those are some movers and shakers boys, I'm truly envious. Thanks for the good reference photos too
I should have pics up of my prospect around 0930 saturday morning.

Does anyone know, are the lew horton, no dash 686 2.5 models standard actions or performance center actions? I've seen differing opinions in chats.

I don't have time to compliment each photo individually, so I'll just say there sure are a bunch of beautiful guns depicted above. Not an ugly one in the bunch. I've never held a 2.5" 686...but I can definitely see why y'all are so attracted to them. They look perfectly proportioned, balanced, symmetrical...and probably just as pleasant to handle and shoot.

They were standard production guns. I recall they were one of or the earliest production 2.5” 686s.

It was sold to me as a -4, but I donít have a photo of the inside handy, so Iíll have to go in the safe and check.

@2Aeveryday

Two things you should be aware of: 1) This gun is subject to the recall. If it has been done there would be an "M" stamped adjacent to the model & serial number under the yoke. 2) The 2.5" barreled guns have ejector rods that will not completely clear a .357 length case from the cylinder - hence the popularity of the 3" K & L frame .357's.

Small matters, probably insignificant to most, but I thought you ought to know seeing as how smitten you are.

Adios,

Pizza Bob

The -4 has the rounded front edge of the rear sight leaf. Some came with flash chromed and some with case hardened parts. No need to pop the sideplate.

Thanks Bob, solid info, I'll double check. I did know about the short ejector, but like you say, love makes you bend further than you knew you could sometimes

As I understand it, the recall isn't a big deal. In fact, most collectors prefer the guns without the M stamp. The issue was with some soft primers causing the gun to lock up after firing, IIRC. Don't let the recall stop you from getting the gun.

I like the look of the tiger maple Ahrends, but I like the old magna look better.

Ok here she is. Small pics at the bottom of this post. What do ysll reckon shes worth. Looks like replacement grips atleast. Doesn't have great "sing" with trigger on the extreme right angle pull. Thanks for your quick help. Alot of vultures here.

Also, at full lockup, trigger still depressed, I can see a sliver of the trailing edge of each chamber through the bore. Assuming that means the timing is a bit off too. All things considered, he wants 1k at this time

Mine was $650, but I traded for it. $1,000 seems high to me. That brand of stocks + magnums usually result in blood loss for me

That last photo looks like there is another one below? Your LGS seems loaded.

Just me, but in the condition you describe, for that amount of money, I would much rather have a new performance center 686 plus. My shooting buddy has one, and it's my favorite gun of his.

Good luck with your decision.

Just my opinion but without box or original grips, $1,000 is way over priced. You can certainly do better!

Found a 686-2 4" with square grips for $750 asking. Looks GREAT but guy wont let me take the grips off. And may have a slight cut line above forcing come on top strap.

The girl i came for ended up being a "butterface". Just wasn't meant to be.

But it didn't take long for that lust hit me again when I happened upon an 686-2 4" from a random feller with a few S&W's laying around.

So i had looked her over hard, haggled and was doing some quick googling on the value of these when another feller came up staring at the thing, clearly about to drop the cash. I guess i really wanted her because before i knew it, I yanked out the cash and laid it in the man's hand.

I think shes a beaut.
Fit and function, timing, lockup, "sing" finish all seem great, the "cut line i thought i saw seems to be mostly grime at second look.....But i'm mostly ignorant, and clearly a lustful individual, so unsure if i got a nose, or i got hosed

So what do y'all think? reasonable price?

be honest, i can take it. and thanks again for keeping up
