Mod 69 grips

Apparently these s&w combat grips aren’t gonna work out. What do y’all recommend as far as wood grips. BTW, I went 4 for 5 on wild hogs with hot loads when this happened.

Owweee! my blister didn't bleed I went back to OE synthetic grips on my 686 . Since you want wood maybe Pachmayr Renegade grips

I'm not gonna lie,I took the wood off the ones I changed and put the rubber grips back on them.

I’ve put the rubber ones back on and may just stick with them. I had thought about ahernds or maybe hogue wood combat.

I put a set of Pachmayr Compacs on mine. Haven't shot it yet though.

They're not wood, but I do like the smooth VZ grips on my 69. I added the medallions.

I’m fond of culina target stocks. Or factory target stocks. The factory stocks work good. Both are thick at the top where the altamonts are thin and sharp. Using square but grips will have a gap in the back but can be filled pretty easily. Culina stocks are top notch. Coke bottle shaped and will fit your round but good. I wish S&W used culina grips on all the production guns.

I'm with Bobbysixkiller about the Culina targets. They are some of the most comfortable grips I have used and all 3 of my N frame 44s wear them. I use the round to square conversions on the round butt guns. The ones I have are absolutely beautiful, but are not cheap. But Johan also makes service grade stocks if you want to save some coin but still have the great fit on your guns. I believe his service grade stocks are a plain grade of walnut, according to his website. If you go service grade, it looks like they are $115 without medallions.

For hot loads, my recommendation is to sell the M69 and buy an N-frame 629. I've shot my M69 enough to know I would never put hot loads through it. The gun might take it, but my hand wouldn't.

A buddy mounted X grips on his new 329; we then put some hot hunting loads thru it. Very comfortable but would have been similar I'm sure to the photo above without the extra good fit.


If you wouldn't mind, OP, re: I went 4 for 5 on wild hogs with hot loads when this happened" would you mind giving some idea of what a suitable hog load might be with this model?

These are culina target round conversions on my 69. Though it doesn’t get fed really hot ammo. Mostly minimum load magnums with unique. No sharp edges. Nice and wide.

OP, nice score on the hogs! IRT alternate grips, I'd go with the recommendations of those above for use with full house loads in your 69. A synthetic grip, preferably one that covers the backstrap should make for less painful shooting.

My 2.75" 69 currently wears a set of Goncalo Alves Ahrends retro combats. With this gun I use mostly mid-range loads (240gr cast SWC at 950-1000 FPS). At this power level they are comfortable to me. However a full charge load will sting my hand pretty well.

The main problem I had was the sharp edges on the altamont grips I had put on the 69. I’ve since taken the sharp edges off and put the grips on a 2” nickel mod 19. Thanks for all the info I’ll try a couple of the wood stocks out and post pics later.

When your going to a barbeque and want to show off your gun, put the wood grips on. If your going to shoot it use rubber grips!. I hear people criticizing Pachmayr & Hogue rubber grips but you can't beat them for recoil control!!

Pachmyre grips ,,,OR ,, custom from someone like Herrett custom.
The harder the gun kicks, lighter the gun is the better the fit must be...

Sounds like you solved the problem with the elimination of the sharp edges.

I do not find rubber grips, as such, to be any better than wood. What I do find is that Frank Pachmayr and Guy Hogue were among the best modern grip designers, along with Bill Rogers and the somewhat earlier Walter Roper.

However, virtually no one grip fits all hands. While I have been very fortunate with a number of Pachmayr and Hogue designs, YMMV.

Try out whatever you can get your hands on.

I didn't try the Compacts on my 69 but on my 629 3" Trail Boss they put my middle finger middle knuckle right behind the trigger guard where it got painfully hammered.

I have the Hogue Bantam grips in wood on both the 629 and the 69 now. I like the feel in my hand with both now but I haven't shot the 69 enough with hot loads yet to recommend.

I did like the 69 with hot loads when wearing the Hogue Bantam grips in rubber but I didn't like the design for installation and removal.

It wasn’t chronograph day, I’m sure it’s less in this gun. Still hot though, too hot for me out of this on a regular basis. The loads I’m shooting run around 1050-1100 with the same hard cast bullets. Not so rough on the old hands!

For my meat hooks, (And I am normally big on replacing my grips), I think S&W got it perfect with their factory rubber grips.

I am a wood grip kind of guy yet the factory wood grips on my 629 6.5", 29 6.5" and 629 3" all do the same web of the hand damage. I don't reload and only use factory ammo, no +P Buffalo Core.

I replaced both of the 6.5" grips with Hogue and Badger grips on the 3". The grip switch outs solved the web of the hand issues.
