My "New" 625-6 Mountain Gun UPDATE
I was at the local indoor range with my 3", .45 Colt 625-7 and when I was done shooting I went over to the display cases to see if any interesting consignments came in.
There it was! A 625-6 Mountain gun in .45 Colt. Of course I had to look at it. Doesn't hurt to just look, now does it?
They were asking $750 for it. I offered $700. So, I guess I wasn't just looking anymore. The owner was called and she countered with $725. I said, "Deal". No box or papers, but I didn't care. This was the first used one I had seen and as I like to say, I have a collection of guns, but I don't collect guns. I shoot them. I definitely wasn't going to frame it and hang it on the wall.
It has a few warts, but nothing major. The rear sight blade has the corners filed down and the front was painted red. I have a new rear blade and a few minutes with some acetone and an old toothbrush should fix the front. Besides a few scratches here and there, everything else looks good.
It has Ahrend's Tactical grips. I have the smooth version, which I prefer, on a couple of other N frames, but these with the finger grooves feel good. We'll see.

It looks good to me. Mtn guns are great utility guns. I also think you did just fine on the price.

That was a good buy. I’ve had my 625-6 MG since it was new back ‘96. It’s among my favorite guns to shoot. One of these days I hope to run across a 3” 625-7.

As you probably know, that's a great price.
Make sure you get it dirty.

The last one I saw sold for $1000 with the factory and a set of nice Herretts grips, box, and papers. It was sold when I saw it or I'd have bought it for that.

That is a great score Irate.
Mine is one of my favorites.
Even with the warts you mention, the price was very right.
Enjoy that great gun.

Went to the range today, but first let me tell you what I did yesterday.
The gun had oil on the outside, more than necessary, especially on a stainless one. I took the grips off and found oil on the inside of them. Not surprising. The real surprise was to come. All the screws, side plate, thumb piece and strain were not tight. The internals were nasty! Too much oil everywhere, as if someone sprayed it on. Of course there was a lot of grime and residue that the oil attracted.
I stripped it bare and cleaned and inspected everything. Fortunately all was in good shape. I lubed it, sparingly, and put it back together.
The rear blade was replaced and the red paint removed from the front blade.
I was told the original owner took good care of her guns. I guess she missed this one.
The load at the range was 8 grains of unique in a Starline case, federal primer and a Bear Creek Supply 255 grain rnfp bullet. Target has 25 rounds in it shot at 10 yards.
I'm very happy with the gun and it is definitely a keeper.

Great score!!
Welcome to the 625-6 Colt fraternity
The Ahrends look great - $75
A couple years ago I found mine NIB at a local show. I am not particularly fond of Magnaporting for the .45 Colt, but it was done through the factory.

AND, it sold for that price, plus tax.
I would not consider selling mine for $950, so the OP did really well.

^^^^^^^^^
Same here
Something special about a Smith chambered for the .45 Colt, especially if it’s in a nifty MG.

That's a very nice stainless N frame in a rare caliber made in a good era just before everything changed to mim parts and internal locks.
The barrel markings were the only thing I didn't like about that period and that's got absolutely nothing to do with how well they shoot!

The adjustable rear sight on S&W revolvers is prone to damage. Skeeter Skelton, Bill Jordan and others recommended rounding the corners on the sight blade. I have done that to the revolvers I used as duty guns.

Irate45, that is a very good buy for a Model 625-6. From your range report, it appears you enjoy shooting your Mountain Gun.
My 625-9 is a later model than your 625-6 and certainly not as desirable of a revolver as our 625-6. I've had my Model 625-9 since 2005 and enjoy shooting this sweet shooter. I've even used my 625-9 in IDPA. It is my trail gun when out wondering about in the wilderness and it sits in the nightstand next to my side of the bed.
Love the .45 Colt cartridge.
S&W Model 625-9 "Mountain Gun" in .45 Colt
Thanks for looking at my Mountain Gun.
God bless,
Birdgun
