Default Going price on used 617 22LR?

I am thinking of selling my 617-3, 22lr, 6", 6 shot with Millet red dot scope. I have had it for years, but never really have fallen in love with it. To me, it feels clunky and too heavy for the caliber.

I put it up for sale on two state specific hunting/firearms forums for $850 FTF. I've had absolutely ZERO interest in the last week.

Am I asking too much? If so, what is the going rate for these? It is in good shape.

Do you have the original open sights ? Is it a 6 round or 10 round cylinder? Is it the original aluminum cylinder? Does it have The original box and paperwork & tools?

A lot of people are turned off by the large red dot sight. If you can remove the red dot and install the original sights. Then sell the red dot separate. Unfortunately they made a large # of 617's, which keeps the value a little lower. I have seen them sell (in the box, 10 round cyl, all original) in the $700 - $750 range.

It is a 6-shot. I do have original blue box. I think I still have the original rear sight. No paperwork that I am aware of. My have it filed away somewhere? I have no idea about the cylinder.

Although all Model 617s - and 17s, for that matter - enjoy good values, the ones that seem to garner the most interest are the original no-dash versions, especially the four-inch. I have both four- and six-inch no-dash 617s in as-new condition and $700 would not pry either of them from my hands.

I believe this has the steel cylinder; the 617-2 had a 10-round aluminum alloy cylinder.

If the gun has been been altered (drilled/tapped) for the optic mount that would lower its value, but if not I would guess it would sell easily in the $650-700 range. Post photos of it with the original rear sight and box and it may even go a little higher.

My best guess is ask $550 without the red dot. If someone offered me $500 on the spot it would be tempting.
Your competition is new stock. If you shop long and hard you can sometimes find a new one for $650-675.

I'll never understand the dash infatuation shown in this board. So take the following with that bias known.

I don't think the general public cares about the dash number.

Modern 22 handguns are mostly shooters. Which even further removes a 617 from the dash craze.

Being a shooter a 10 shot >> 6 round

Is there a lot of traffic on these "hunting" forums? For 22 caliber handguns?

Buds has them for 720 new all day. In the more desirable 4" bbl.

An old, large optic may detract from its value, especially if the buyer has to buy open sights.

I think that's a lot of things that likely contribute to low demand and thus low price for this gun.

And then there is the coveted, 17-6. Much better looking and more accurate.

I appreciate all of the helpful replies!

I assumed that since it is an older, no-hole, model that it would be worth more. I understand now that I am heavily overpriced! I need to rethink my approach!

Thanks all!

Good luck on your sale.

Why don't you post if for sale here, for no charge to you?
I would prefer face to face. I've never shipped a firearm. I always assumed that it is more hassle than it is worth. I realize that it has to go FFL to FFL.

Absolutely no one did. In fact I made that exact opposite point with my statement.

OP posted the gun outside of this forum, or the general public (defined as not here). Thus selling the gun not-here he's unlikely to collect a premium based upon the dash number.

Is is possible for a private person to ship a pistol without going through an FFL on his end. And just shipping to a FFL but the FFL you are shipping to has to be OK with that. You just need to send a copy of your drivers license with it.

I saw your original post, on the "other forum" (I also reside in PA), and when I saw the price, I lost interest instantly.

I own a few 617's, my favorites being 10 shooters.

I just bought a brand new 4" 617-6 in Dec (2019) for under $700.

But I do have 3 - 6 shooters, a no-dash and -1 (both with the original combats and the -1 has the original box/paperwork/etc, LNIB) and I picked up both for under $600 last year (2019), the third I picked up real cheap and couldn't turn down the offer made to me.

So, at least for me, the 6 shooter you offer, with a red dot that I would have absolutely no use for, at the price listed, was a complete "no go" for me.

This is just me, but perhaps it can give you some more insight into what others might see/feel.

Wish you the best of luck with it.

My S&W 617 is an 8 3/8" model and the love of my life. They are GREAT revolvers. One of my grandson's will get it after I die because I am never selling mine.

The no dash models, in good shape, with combat grips, box, docs, and tools are selling for around $1000 or more, according to completed sales on GB. Later versions are selling around $650-750, give or take, depending on condition. The general public may not discern between a ND vs. a later edition, but collectors sure do. Also, a gun without the lock, definitely has more appeal to some folks.
OP, I agree that, if possible, you should put the stock sights back on it. I would then put a $750 price on it, and see if that gets some interest. You can always negotiate down a bit. My "gut" says $700 is probably the number. tYou can post it in the classifieds here, as you already have an idea of what "we" think it's worth.
Good luck!
ps a 4" 617-6 (has lock) sold here this week for $600 (almost new in box, with extra grips. A 617 ND, with Hogues, not wood combats, sold her last week for $750. Keep in mind, too, that the gun market is usually softer between Christmas and Tax Day.

I took that God awful red dot off of it and put the original sight back on it. I relisted it for $650 on those two sites. I even threw in some trade ideas.

I appreciate all of the replies folks! Thank you!

How much more accurate is it compared to a newly built 617?

I just sold a 6" 617-1, tools, box and papers here in the classifieds for $750 shipped.. I'd guess that with no papers, tools that your's would be in the $675- $700/shipped range.

I paid $725 plus tax

I love my 617-4, 6" barrel Pre-lock, 10 shooter. I have the rear sight assembly. Everything you see bought for $500 a while back. I got a helluva deal. It will last well beyond my great grand kids. If they take care of it. I don't shoot 22LR's that often, but it is a keeper. Great companion for my Ruger 10/22.

I think with my post is that we all value things differently.

Well I would do this if u want to sell and get closer to your asking price
Of course remove the red dot and put the stock sight back on...
What will make yours stand out
Make it the best one available
I would say find a better set of grips
Wood grips would be great
But Factory Grips
Best of luck on your sale
Shipping a firearm is quite straight forward as long as You have a local gun shop or FFL you deal with
God Bless,John

IMHO, that has little to do with determining what true market value is. It is just you bragging about the great deal you got. Not that I blame you. But it is clearly an outlier.

Anyone owning a S&W 617 has one of the finest .22LR revolvers ever made in my humble opinion; as I have fired quite a few.

I have both a 4" and a 6". My last one was $625 last year like new but used. The other one I purchased a few years ago on this forum for $750 like new but used. At that time they were hard to find. With Reeds selling them for $619 I think you are looking at less than $600. Lock or no lock makes no difference to me. With it being a 6 shot I don't care for it. Just my opinion.
