Default Grips for 31-1

I have this square butt 31-1 J frame. It's a fine shooter and I want to shoot it a lot more. The problem is the grips. I have XL hands and there just isn't enough for me to grip to shoot it well. I'm not going to get rid of the original grips but jeez I sure would like something I could hold onto.

Anyone know of any wood or G10 grips that help me shoot this very nice small revolver?

J-frame target grips would be a huge improvement. You should be able to find a pair on e-bay or GB. I found mine at gunparts (Numrich). Be aware that some folks selling them think they are worth a small fortune. Mine were new old stock and I paid $45, less than a year ago. Or you could always post on the forum in the buy/sell section.

Some of the rubber grips are pretty bulky. I like the small wood J-Frame grips! (And I wear XL to XXL gloves)

I just put some Pachmayr compacts on my 30-1 and the gun stopped moving around during the trigger press. Just like Ivan the Butcher said, they are quite a bit thicker than the stock wood grips and may just do it for you.

Here is my 31-1 with a set of factory Smooth Target Stocks. I too have large hands and they made a world of difference. The nice thing is that the J Frame Smooth Target Stocks are often found with nicely figured and bookmatched panels and are a lot less expensive than K or N Frame Smooth Targets.

Factory Targets are nice, but there are also many other grip makers. Hogue, Altamont, Herritt, and many custom makers that can produce exactly what you are looking for.

I put S&W checkered targets on my 31-1....feels and looks good....but I love the looks of factory smooth targets.....either one is a good choice IMHO

Default Here you go

Here are a few photos of Herrett’s Shooting Star stocks and S&W J frame target stocks (checkered and smooth). The S&W targets fit SB and RB models.

+1 for the Herretts Shooting Star stocks. They are often available on ebay at reasonable prices.

I got a set of finger groove smooth combats in what looks like ebony for my 60-4. They came from Thailand via flea-Bay and give my slightly larger than average hands plenty of purchase. I haven’t looked for them for a while, but last time I did look, the dark wood was no longer shown.

I’ll try to post an image... I like both the look and the ergonomics. The J-frame is upside down in the photo, while a similar pair of square grip K-frame grips appear in “Project 616” above.

Another vote for the J-frame targets. I have 3" and 4" Model 31s and both wear these. I like them a lot.
The Heretts are nice too. I have some on other J-frames. And they can usually be found on e-bay for less money.
