Talking S&W Performance Center 629 2.625"bbl

I'm in process of negotiating the purchase of a S&W Performance Center 629 2.625"bbl .44 Magnum. I plan to use Underwood 44 Special 200 Grain Bonded Jacketed Hollow Points in it to start with.

I am also considering changing the sights to XS Sights Big Dot to speed up my sight acquisition.

What I would really like input on is which Pachmayr grip would be best for the gun. The DIAMOND PRO GRIP for round butts or the DECELERATOR GRIPS for round butt N frame S&Ws?

I will be shooting full house .44 Magnum loads in practice with this gun and I have shot such loads out of a Ruger Super Redhawk.

I used a set of diamond pro pachs. Item # 02480. On a 625 with just 45's. On the top strap, it's really narrow there, and acted like someone hitting the webbing in my hand with a hammer and a 1" block of wood.
It was on the gun a whole 3 cylinders (?). And now they're in the box it came in.
I would recommend hogue X frame 500 grips. They're on my 329. I'll never take em off.

I've been happy with the Diamond Pros on everything I've put them on. Plenty cushie for me.

All my X-frames have the Hogue Tamers.

I picked up one of the PC snubs last week. Installed a set of S&W flatside combats.

On the maiden range trip I used one of my hand loads that consisted of a Starline case, Hornady 200 gr XTP and 8.5 grains of Power Pistol. Hornady lists this as a max load for the .44 Spl. cartridge. It is a stout load but not punishing. I've been shooting the same load from my Ruger GP100. The GP has the Lett Compac rubber grip.

I noticed no increase in discomfort between the GP, with the rubber grip, and the 629, with the wood grip. The 629 does weigh in a couple of ounces heavier than the GP.

Intentions for the PC snub is a diet of mainly stout specials or low end magnums. The combats work fine for that. If I were planning on shooting a bunch of full house magnums I'd probably be looking for rubber.

I posted a thread on the PC....it's still on the first page here.

Great gun, I think you'll really like it. However to my knowledge XS doesn't make a replacement sight for Smith's with the dovetail front sight.

XS makes a set for the S&W 629 Mountain Gun but I don't know if it will fit the 629 Performance Center as XS has not answered my email. I will be calling them Monday to discuss it. Perhaps they can be modified to work. I really like XS sights, so I hope they can.

Have you tried Underwood's 44 Special 200 Grain Bonded Jacketed Hollow Points? I understand they use the Speer Gold dot HP bullets loaded at 975fps out of a 4" barrel. I think I will test some to see how they perform.

I have been shooting .44 Magnum Winchester 210gr. Silvertips in my Ruger Super Redhawk .44 Magnum which I really like. So I will also try some of them as they are not as hot as some .44 Mag. ammo.

The Mountain guns have pinned front sights, like the majority of S&W wheel guns, the PC snubs have a dovetail front sight that is almost impossible to find a replacement for unfortunately. Its generally the main item I hear people complain of regarding the PC 627 and 629 if the factory sight doesn't work for them.

S&W should get together with XS sights and offer them as an option. After all the 629 Performance Center .44 Mag. is an ideal close range "combat/personal defense" carry gun. I know not everyone likes the sights however there are thousands of us that do.

I have a set on Hogue Tammer grips on my Ruger Super Redhawk .44 Mag 7.5 inch. I thought they were Pachmayr but when I took out the original Ruger box when I had the grips changed I found out I was wrong!

So, I had to correct my error!

I found this for night sights for the Performance Center 629 2.625"bbl .44 Magnum; if you are having the same trouble I was having.
