Model 986 question
I have a pro series 986. I am looking for a larger grip for it. I am new and get confused on what frames are which. I think it is an l frame but not certain. Any tips on where to look for a different grip is welcome. Also how can you tell the difference between a rough and square butt.

The 986 pro is an L frame round butt.
When I tried using a bigger grip for it, the forum suggested an X frame grip with a covered backstrap for my large hands. It worked.
I later on changed them to some Ahrends, but they're worth a shot.

Thanks, I dont have large hands but I thought a larger grip would help with a consistent trigger placement. Where can I find those grips?

You can get the X frame tamer grips from the Smith and Wesson website. They're made by hogue grips. I think Hogue started selling them too.

I didn't see anyone answer part of the question, "What frame size is it" yes, it is an L Frame, but the L Frame fits into both K and L as well as the X frame. You have quite a selection available, but just be certain to specify Round Butt, or Round butt to Square butt conversation.

This shows what they look like. Taken from the Hogue website.
On the hilt, round corners, round butt. Pointed corners, square butt.
