Default Canted barrels?

The non pinned 66-2 2.5" I got back from smith appears to be canted to the left. Not something they just did, but looks like it left the factory that way. Is this more common with the non pinned barrels? This barrel has some issues. I didn't realize how bad the pitting was when I asked them to refinish it. One of the lands is pretty pitted at the muzzle. I did shoot it with just some FMJ 130g .38s. It shot way right and I adjusted the sights to at least get the hits in the same general area. I was thinking about counterboring.

I believe it is more common with the later models, specifically -6s for 629s. I don't have a single -5 with a canted barrel.

General rule of thumb for any new build smith is to inspect before buying, which is hard to do if bought online.

Perhaps less common of a condition with pinned barrels, or at least with pinned barrels the cant is much less due to having to get the pin to slide through the pin channel in the barrel. With non-pinned barrels it is too easy to get the right torque and still not have the front sight at 12 o'clock.

Every new revolver I buy, I expect to have to send it to the factory to have the barrel turned to get it closer to 12 o'clock.

AACCKK, not another canted barrel posting.

Thought the mods would stop this one along with the "dreaded ILS" lock issues. Don

The ILS is a feature of the deign that people happen to dislike. Canted barrels are the result of improperly assembled revolvers. banning the discussion of improperly assembled revolvers would essentially prohibit addressing genuine problems that S&W customers experience.

I KNOW all about the ILS, it's part of "they don't make them like they used to" and that's good. Today's guns are made of better materials held to tighter tolerances, they just don't have as much hand surface finishing as the older stuff.

Canted barrels are another subject that has been beaten to death over and over. The internet gives a huge voice to every tiny complaint people have and I suspect that many of these "canted barrel" threads are about discrepancies you have to obsess over to see any issue. Don

Never thought much about it. This gun was manufactured in 1983 year after pin drop so I had a random thought question. I did get my answer early on and I appreciate it.

Very sad but true. Continues to be a issue for some reason. Even sadder it happens just as much with the PC guns.

I would think that with todays modern manufacturing that the gun could be clamped in a jig and something like a laser could be used to square up the sights .

I like to push back on what I consider trivia that detracts from useful discussion about firearms. Don

In this ongoing debate, I've come to the
conclusion that no barrels are canted.

The frames are akltter.

We’re so lucky to have you here. How else would we stumble through the world of firearms discussions without being able to ascertain for certain which topics were useful?
