Default Does Smith and Wesson sell parts directly?

My 500PC with the 3.5 inch barrel came with an unfluted cylinder, I would like to make the gun a little bit lighter for when I am shooting high recoil loads. Is there any way I can buy the fluted cylinder with the satin finish directly from S&W? Or are there any online retailers that sell that part?

Pic related is what I mean by fluted cylinder with satin finish.

Welcome! You can call the factory and ask if they sell the part you seek. Numrich Gun Parts has it listed on their site (at least the photo is of a fluted cylinder) but it is out of stock. If S & W sells it they may insist you send the gun in for fitting also.

The flutes don't remove a lot of weight, however...and if you want to shoot heavy loads having a lighter gun may not be the direction to go?

A cylinder will most likely require fitting, and possibly the barrel removed and turned to set it back to address BC gap. I recommend a qualified revolver gunsmith to do that kind of work.

Smith and Wesson does sell some, but not all of their parts to the public. I'm sure you could arrange for them to install/fit the cylinder you desire to your revolver, if such a cylinder is available, but they will not sell it to you "over the counter", so to speak.

I'm not sure why you would want to make the gun "lighter" for heavier loads though. Seems a heavier platform would be more comfortable for magnum/heavy loads. A fluted cylinder wouldn't shave off very much weight either, considering the cost of the factory modification.

Yeah I checked numerich and a couple other sites, they have the glossy/chrome finish cylinders typical of the older .500 magnums, I'm trying to find one with the satin finish found on the newer performance center models.

And yes I want a lighter gun for heavier recoil. I'd pay top dollar for a scandium frame .500 magnum.

Yeah I kinda figured it'd have to be a gunsmith job.

Do you happen to know how much the fluted cylinders weigh vs the unfluted ones? Perhaps S&W would be willing to make a pentagonal cylinder for me if I threw enough shekels their way...

Smith & Wesson does sell parts

But there are various levels:

There are parts that they will sell to everybody

There are parts that they will only sell to gunsmiths/armorers

There are parts that are reserved for factory fitting and installation only

The weight difference between the two factory cylinders is going to be less than you expect. i will have to disassemble a couple of revolvers to give you the exact weights

If you really want a pentagonal cylinder this is not something that Smith & Wesson will do for you. Your best bet for a a pentagonal cylinder will be someone like Hamilton Bowen who is a known custom cylinder manufacturer

You could always just put wood grips on it. That would definitely increase felt recoil
