What Kind of Wood Is This? Model 66-3
I have these stocks on my model 66-3 pre-lock 2 1/2" snubbie. I believe these stocks are K-frame round butt smooth targets. I haven't seen others like this, but then I haven't been looking that close. My question is - what kind of wood is this? I like the figuring. If you get them into the light just right, they do have a little bit of an open grain.

I should have asked if these are stocks that were made by S&W.

Yes they are smooth targets for a RB, and nice looking too. Don't see them very often wrong here. Nice 66 as well!

The grain in Smith’s stocks varied greatly - some look like fence posts, others were truly spectacular. Just luck of the draw. Those pictured are very nice. If I saw em on a gun show table for $250, I’d take em home.

Their stunning!
I like them better than the checkered pair I have on my 3" 66-2.

Those are beauties! When I bought new S&Ws years ago, I seemed to get the "fence post" grade factory grips, devoid of figure

S&W 66 grips
I may very well be wrong, but I don't think they're original factor grips. I "believe" they are made outside of the US for S&W. S&W no longer manufactures their own grips here in the US.
Perhaps someone can verify or advise differently

During the 1990s S&W closed their wood shop and started buying wood stocks from other companies. IIRC that happened in the later 1990s.
Those look like S&W made stocks but when small scraps of wood can be sold for $250 there are going to be reproductions offered as originals and out right fakes. I do not mean to be critical of the original poster. I just mean that I do not trust my eye anymore. I've never seen smooth round butt Targets priced as high as Combats. Ten years ago they were only about $50.

You're correct that S&W no longer makes their own wood stocks and that there are replicas, copies and knock-offs out there, but this particular set I'm highly confident from the pictures are original S&W smooth round-butt targets, aka, banana grips.

Round butt targets, smooth and checkered, have been creeping up significantly in price for several years now; not quite what the original factory combats sell for, but closing the distance.
These, as earlier stated, I believe are legit. One way to know for sure is to check the backside and see if the S&W medallion goes through and has the metal backing inside the stock; the copies I've seen with S&W medallions are just press-in -- nothing going through to the back.

First off, let me say thanks to those that have replied. When I recently acquired this gun, it had a set of ugly Goodyears on it. So I looked into my stocks-stash and dug out these stocks which I had gotten from a small gun show years ago.
Here are a couple of pictures of the back sides. There is a small stamp which I tried to show in the picture. Any thoughts on the stamp?

I highlighted the correct portion of your paragraph
These Factory grips have been very popular for years. They were made of walnut and checkered too.

It varies widely in grain & color.
I bought a 17 no dash a few months back wearing the diamond walnut targert. Much nicer than the GA.

Nice set of GA bananas. I bought a M19 years ago specifically for the grips and was pleasantly surprised to find it was a factory round butt and a State Department gun as well.

I remember back in the 70's gun shops had displays of factory grips on rotating displays. I remember picking out some beautiful matching grips.I still have probably a half dozen pair.

I remember those too. Ray's Sport Shop in NJ was a large S&W distributor and LE vendor. I purchased a few sets of S&W grips from that display. If I knew then what I know now I would have emptied that rack.
To the OP, beautiful S&W grips.

Some Model 66’s with the smooth grips. The colors definitely vary.
