Default 686-4 frame type?

I am considering long distance negotiations for pickup of a 686-4 . I saw it briefly last week but cannot remember if the grip frame is square or round. It had square type Hogue grips on it, but did they make in the -4 all the frames round with either (or) type rubber stocks for them? It is a 4".

I do not own a 4", SCSW says 686's were built on the square butt frame, yet my PC 6" and 7.5" examples have round grip frames.

If I recall, the 4" 686-4s were originally square butts, but some of the later ones (and the 2.5 and 3" versions) were round butt. I have seen early ones with wood stocks and later ones with Hogue rubber grips.

Why not ask the seller?

Yes, the majority of 686-4’s with 4” and longer barrels had square butt grip frames. S&W standardized on round butt grip frames in 1996 and the 686-5 didn’t come out until 1997. My 4” 686-4 (ser. # CALXXXX) and my 6” 686-4 (ser. # CAZXXXX) both have round butt frames.

I think right around the time they went to the new style MIM cylinder release they were also switching to all round butt frames.

SCSW typically lists how they were originally released, but doesn't always list all updates that don't generate a -#.
