I looked at the 625-2 Apex Custom for sale long and hard but I just could not afford the divorce it would cost! The gun I could afford. LOL

Dang it! Now I have to get one. I've been looking for something to share the work load with my 1917. I have other wheel guns in .45LC, but for some reason I really like .45ACP (and no chasing brass). Very nice acquisition. I am envious.

There are two custom tuned 625-2 5" guns left on Gunsinternational.com if you can stand the high altitude of the prices. One is an Apex Tactical Custom tuned and the other is a Full Ron Powers Grandmaster Custom.

Considering if you sent in a stock gun it would cost you somewhere between double to quadruple what they are asking for the used price so it all depends on what you want and what you can afford. It was just too rich for my poor blood. Good luck and happy shooting!

A great pistol. I love both of mine. Here’s my old Model of 1988 and the much newer 625-10. I’ve worked on my 625-10, had to replace the yoke with a s/s one as it was flexing when ejecting sticky brass and I bobbed the hammer so it’s a DAO now. My occasional winter carry. I also put hi-vis front sights on the 625 for ZSA competition.

Will not regret. Carried one for several years in Miami. Always left an impression, on bad guys. Dream to shoot. Good luck.

One thing I really like is the bobbed hammer. I watched a long video by Jerry Charles Miculek Jr. where he explained that to get a really good high grip to control the recoil for fast controlled shooting the hammer has to be bobbed on this model handgun. He went in depth into the high grip of this revolver which I believe he knows holding so many world speed shoot records. I found it very enlightening compared to the high 1911 grip.

Now, I only have to buy .22LR and .45ACP handgun ammo.

I see you are south of LA and I am north of LA in Canyon Country, part of the Santa Clarita area. I also noted the The crossed cannons. I took officer's basic for ROTC at Fort Sill, Oklahoma and was Air Defense Artillery.

My gun is custom modified for high grasp double action shooting. That is why it has the full trigger and action job consisting of the Apex Evolution IV parts kit and a level IV ICORE action work. If the hammer had not been changed out for a hammer-less model you cannot use the high grasp to control the revolver better in rapid fire as the back of a normal hammer will hit your hand. It is all in what you plan to use the revolver for.

Originally designed as a semi-drop in replacement for Performance Center revolvers, the Apex Evolution IV N-Frame Hammer is redesigned using the same pinned sear and stirrup found on the Performance Center hammer. Additionally, the Apex Evolution IV Hammer replaces MIM components found in Smith & Wesson non-Performance Center revolvers and Performance Center revolvers made after January 2012. Manufactured from heat treated 17-4 Ph stainless steel, the hammer is wire EDM and CNC machined then surface ground to ensure consistent performance.

Check out Apex Tactical - Details.

It was my first 5" barrel too. I really like the balance with that length. Since I got my 625-2 .45 ACP), I purchased a 629-6 also with a 5" barrel. I'd sure would like to find a 625 5" in .45 Colt.
625-2

629-6

To Mike, SC Hunter; that is exactly my point also which is each to their own.

I bought the Smith & Wesson 625-8 Apex Custom 45 ACP/4" for specific purpose. Just as when I bought my Ruger Super Redhawk 7.5" .44 Magnum and carried 330gr. Randy Garrett Hammerheads in it. We all have our likes and dislikes. I would prefer it in a 5" barrel like the Ruger Super Redhawk Toklat .454 with its 5" barrel. I like the feel and the balance better. However, I'm not in big bear country anymore.

In my last post I was explaining my hammer was not as you said "I saw the hammer ground off on yours." I meant no offense but offered an accurate explanation. I'm sorry if you were offended in any manner.

We all make up the "shooting fraternity". Some are target shooters, some are hunters, some are trick shooters, some are plinkers, and some just want to have fun. You are more than welcome not to like my new S&W just as I do not personally care for many different styles of S&W be they revolvers or semi-auto but I can understand why others do like them.

So, can anyone tell me about the USPSA and getting started shooting their courses?

I am going down to fill out my paperwork to get my new Apex Tactical S&W 625-8 4" out of CA purgatory tomorrow. Man, I can hardly wait to get my hands on it. I will be picking up all the extra equipment but I will have to wait the mandatory 10 days before I can lay hands on it. Auuuugh!

I just got back from filling out all my paperwork and 10 days from today and my new gun will be mine. I checked out her trigger pull and I am VERY IMPRESSED as was the shop owner and a fellow patron. I have felt much worse on single action semi-autos and that is saying something considering I'm talking about a double action only revolver.

I also picked up all my new goodies and are busy playing with and sorting through them all. It feels sort of like a late Christmas but who's complaining; NOT ME!

With all the guns that have come and gone there is obviously a reason that they have been producing these since ~ 1917. An idea this good is hard to improve on. Nice shooting Dave.

I'm considering the purchase of a case of 45 Auto +P Federal HST 230 Grain Hollow Point LE Ammo P45HST1 ammo for carry use in my new 4". I would like your educated opinions on the subject. It will not be for range work of course other than me practicing with it but to carry for personal defense.

The way things are going in California as regards to ammo sales; I want some spare ammo around the house.
