Fair to whom? The seller screwed himself out of $800+

Congrats on the best gun deal of the week!

Is that a Lew Horton model?

At $700, you did extremely well.

You did extremely well on that one. Especially with the box and combats. I bought mine a couple of years ago for $900 w/o the box. That was a very good find sir. Enjoy.
I treated mine to a nice set of Culinas this past year.

Whats up with the box end label and the serial# in pen over another different serial#?

Clearly NOT the original label, probably not the original box, either.

$700 is an insane deal. I don't even want to tell you what I paid for mine.

I've got the same gun, serial # ALB51xx, that did NOT go through Lew Horton (according to Lew Horton), although it was shipped with a Lew Horton product code, and S&W told me it was a Lew Horton. Between Earl at Lew Horton and myself, we deduced that mine is likely an overrun from the 5000 ordered from S&W.

FWIW, my grips are dated sometime in 1985 if memory serves, but if we are assuming serial numbers are in chronological order numerically, mine would've been shipped after yours.

The box appears to have been altered (serial number), so that makes this a shooter grade 29-3. Given that it is a round butt 3-inch model, which is rarely seen, I'd say that $800 is a very good deal unless there is something wrong with the revolver.

Serial numbers on box were altered, make me wonder what else is also altered.

Nice find!
I just bought a shooter grade 1985 Lew Horton 29-3 on GB for $800 earlier this month.
Seller thought it was a Jovino Custom. Not a bad guess.
Lew Horton noticed the popularity of the Jovino snubs and ordered 7000 624 3" RB with finger groove combats between 84-87.
Those did so well he ordered 5,000 29-3 3" RB most were made in 85.
He couldnt sell all these so Smith and Wesson sold them through other distributors.
The only way to find out if it a Lew Horton or a Lew Horton Overrun is to get a letter from the factory.
In reality, it makes no material difference if this 1 of 5000 went through Lew Horton Distribution or not. It is exactly the same as the Lew Horton Overuns sold through other distributors.

There is no way to tell from the serial number. Some ALA are LH, some are overrun. same with ALB and ALC. In addition there are ALC manufacture dates of Lew Horton 29-3 that precede ALA dates. Guess thats what its called "dreaded" sequence.
The seller must have got lucky with the box or spent a lot of time looking for the proper box with the proper prefix and special order code but why?? Doesn't seem to add value if its not the original box. If they were that tenacious in tracking down such a close to correct box they may have done the same with the grips, many of which are date stamped 1983- 1985 not too hard to find on Ebay.
I would say you have a more than amazing deal on that gun. You could sell those grips for $250 and up on Ebay. the box and cleaning kit for $50+.
In the end you got a beautiful classic shooter for $400 and you don't have to worry about making it a safe queen!

Saw the gun in the flesh over the week end. Velly velly nicey nice. Gun with grips should be well worth $1200-$1300. I had a gun just like it about 18 years ago with factory (I think) rubbers on it I paid $650 for. No way could I shoot one of these anymore.
