Default Two Piece Barrel

When did S&W introduce the two piece barrel and what models use it?

There is a few older threads on sleeved barrels and not sure when S&W started. All the models I know of is new K frames , M29? ,500 and Polymer frame Body Guard .

S&W started using sleeved barrels 20 to 25 years ago. They have used sleeved barrels on all of their frame sizes. Many aluminum framed models obviously got aluminum barrel sleeves to reduce gun weight. Examples are K, L, and N frame Night Guard models, Model 329 .44 Magnum, Model 357 .41 Magnum and Model 325 .45 ACP N frames and .38, .357 and .44 Special L frames. In addition to the more numerous all stainless steel sleeved barrel K frames there were all stainless steel sleeved barrel Model 629 .44 Magnums, Model 520 and Model 519 .357 L frames and Model 60 J frames. It would take a long time to put together a complete list. If you narrow it down to the model that interests you then we could look it up for you. For example Starting with the dash 5 all Model 66s have had sleeved barrels. All earlier dashes had one piece barrels.

Thank-you for the correction. I remembered the most recent two dashes have two piece barrels but got the numbers wrong. I should have looked up the dash numbers rather than relying on memory.

I’ve been thinking of buying a newer k frame with a sleeved barrel. I can see the advantages of a two piece barrel but I admit I was a little concerned when I came across a post in this forum showing a front flange of a two piece barrel that had separated from the inner barrel.

This must be a very rare event as I’ve only managed to find a couple examples of this happening.

A sleeved barrel? Does this mean the outer section of the barrel is investment casted? Just my thoughts

I'm going to say with the 317 Airlite, introduced in Feb-1997.

PS: I don't know how it compares to a true 2-piece barrel, like a M69, though. I've never inspected one but they are listed as having a steel sleeve & aluminum shroud. The question would be if they're bonded together or if they're removable as two separate pieces.

Anybody who has one know?
