Default "Capital E" on cylinder

What would a capital "E" stamp on the cylinder of a Model 640 signify?

Thanks

You got me curious so I just took a look at my 640 no dash cylinder and it's also stamped with an "E".

Probably an inspector's mark or to identify it as a .38 (vs. .357) part. Many stainless K frame .357 cylinders were stamped V, probably for the same reason(s).

It's a 640 no dash which are pre-.357... maybe to in indicate a .38 instead of a 9mm / 940 cylinder?

Does it distinguish between .38 and .357 cylinders--
like "V" and "F", on six shooters?

While I dont have any with the letter "E".
Many of my older SS cylinders are stamped with the letter V and at least one has the letter F.
IIRC that stamp was to identify them at the factory as SS to distinguish them from carbon steel cylinders prior to bluing.

I'm sure this has nothing to do with it, but out of curiosity, does it have a "CEN" serial prefix?

My 640 BKU has no letter. My 640 CEN has the letter E.

Jughed may be onto something.
