Which Altamont Grips For My 686 ?
I have a 686-4 that I use strictly for paper punching and sometimes the steel plate rack . Anyway the stock rubber grips work ok but sure aren’t much to look at so I’d like to get a pair of wood grips to dress up the esthetics.
Altamont has Cokes and Ropers but I’ve never handled either one .
Which one does the hive recommend for target use ?
I wear a large glove if that means anything. Pics please if you have them .
Thanks in advance.

I have several sets of Altamont grips, including the above mentioned Ropers for K/L and N frames. I like how they look, workmanship, quality and feel. Here are a couple other samples of Altamont’s work. There’s a reason so many of the big manufacturers use Altamont for their OEM grips.

Bought a set of Altamont's for a 686+. Didn't feel right so I took a tool grinder too them. Now I like them.

I have a set of the Cokes that I like for my 6" M629.
That said, my regular shooters wear magnas and a BK Grip.

I’ve thought about the coke grips myself but not sure if I would like them. Altamonts that I’ve had in the past are very nicely made but too thin and sharp. But I admit that I haven’t tried the cokes and they look really nice. I would suggest ahrends or culina. If you want a set of ahrends you best hurry. He’s not making them anymore but you can find them on eBay.

My 6" 686 came with Hogue Monogrips on it.
The previous owner used to compete with it.
I also got the Target stocks that it was wearing when it left the factory
so that's what its wearing today.
I'm the oddball and prefer factory grips over the aftermarket.
I do prefer shooting this one with the Hogue grips and I prefer my Pachmayr grips on my 28-2 for shooting too.
The rubber one's just aren't too appealing to me in the looks department.

I like the wood Hogue Monogrips. Plus they have several different types of wood to chose from.

The Safariland loaders I use fit perfectly in the cut out on the left grip.

I like the Hogue mono-grip with one finger grove for range guns.
But my favorite grips are Spegel's and the Extended Boot grip is nice on 4 and 6 inch guns......... K,L and N frames.

Why are you confining your choice to only Altamont grips? They make some fine grips and their customer service is second to none - but they aren't the only grip makers.
If you like the Hogues that came on the gun, but object to the rubber on aesthetic grounds, Hogue makes some beautiful wooden monogrips in a number of different styles and textures. Or go Custom with someone like the Culinas or Spegel (although I understand that he has a two year waiting list). There are lots of grip manufacturers out there, you need to broaden your view.
Adios,
Pizza Bob

I have used Altamont on a few guns but once I bought a Culina, I never looked back. They are an investment but in my opinion, the look and feel are second to none. I now own several of them.

If it’s a square butt gun I would suggest buying some factory target stocks with metal washers. Checkered or smooth.

One thing I don't like about Altamont's is that the area behind the trigger guard is not well rounded like factory targets. Instead its flat with somewhat sharp edges. Does feel very good on that second finger. Observe some of the photos the gang has posted and you'll see what I mean. Although the Cokes seem less guilty of this.
