S&W 25-2 Jovino Effector
Been on the lookout for one of these for some time now. Saw one sell on GB for $2,247 a few weeks ago (see screenshot). While not “unfired” ... eh-hem ”cough-****..” it is rather nice. I guess it pays to know what you’re selling as the one I picked up (attached) was simply listed as a “neat gun” with 6 crummy pics.
So, for less than $900 I swiped me a Jovino, complete with ping pong paddle target hammer, smoothed target trigger and Jovino’s action job (unreal action). I love magna stocks so I modified an old pair of Thai knock offs I picked up last year and they’re pretty close. The smooth back strap is actually quite nice.
Every once in a while even a blind squirrel finds a nut.

Do you have to be upside-down to shoot it? :-)
Sorry, couldn't resist. My photos usually get posted cockeyed, too.
Beautiful revolver!

What, as in type of bullets, are you going to be shooting out of that?

Nice looking revovler
Does it say EFFECTOR on the barrel?
Jovino was not the only gunsmith doing these style conversions
Back in they day there were dozens, perhaps hundreds of shops doing this.
Jovino was one of the largest and he did coin a cool name

As soon as can figure out why the pics keep coming over upside down, I’ll post some better ones. From the research, I’m confident it’s a jovino, but heck, if it’s a behlert I’ll take it

I don't own a S&W in .45 colt but if I were going to one that's what I would want, nice revolver.

I am always looking for a 25-2 with a shorter Barrel. Love it! Even if I did not know what it was I may have had to bid after it. 45 ACP is plenty for stopping power. Also easy to find ammo.

Beautiful!!! Looks legit, and you 'stole' it.
If you don't mind, would you please post the first few digits of the serial number?

Try to slightly crop your pictures, delete the already posted, pictures, and replace them with the cropped version. They should show up properly oriented.

Got some better pics of the rounded hammer and smoothed trigger (both target). From my research these are indicative of Jovino customs, as is the slightly different colored bluing on the barrel. Back strap has been smoothed as well.
I am in need of a letter for a Brazilian 586 that I picked up last year, so I might as well bite the bullet and have this one lettered as well. BTW if anyone is looking for a 586 Brazilian .38 special, there’s a beautiful 2 1/2” on GB with the auction ending soon.
I really appreciate everyone’s feedback. I’m fairly new to the forum but it seems Like it’s full of some of the best folks around.

Does this have the ball bearing lockup in the yoke/cylinder?
And might you be able to take a photo of the grip and backstrap without the stocks installed?

Thanks for confirming. The ball detent cylinder lockup was done by hand and I know the gunsmith moved away from installing this lockup in later Model 25's, but I have yet to find a clear picture of it. The backstrap shape, mainspring screw and nuances with the front sight ramp (and red insert) help in determining whether it's an original gun.
I know not everyone might be interested, but the best way to prove provenance is if you get your particular revolver lettered by S&W and they come back confirming your serial was shipped to John Jovino, NYC, as the store received some 3000 of these big bore Smith & Wesson's shipped directly to them over the years at discount for being such a profitable S&W dealer and distributor.
It's amazing there's still a following for these guns after all these years.

Thanks SAFireman, I've never saw that ad from S & W. I found mine & it came with a copy of GUNS magazine of which it was the cover gun. Now I just carry a 642 w/short barrel gold dots. Had a case of gd's in 45acp. Still love it, but as I age carry it less. As a friend said, when the good guys tell you to throw it down, I don't know how patient they would be with me? Notime2

25-2
about a year ago at a local gun show I was shooting the breeze with a dealer I've known for several years, knowing I am a fan of 25's he showed me one I had never seen before. He didn't know what it was, neither did I. I was astute enough to know it was something special so it came home with me. after researching it on this forum I decided to have it lettered to confirm my suspicions. I got lucky It was in the group of 25's that was shipped to Jovino.
Judging by the recoil shield it has been fired, but not much. Here are some pics.

shrade...very nice Jovino, and the box is a huge plus. I had this one with a very close serial # lettered.
