Carry an NAA .22mag Wasp.
Just bought 43c and a 351c to add to carry.
I’m 72 and just want something to say go away.

I'm probably one of the few people who don't even own a .22 pistol.
I have a 10/22 rifle but no pistol.

Never contemplated carrying a 22 for SD. To my mind a 22 is for killing squirrels, tweety birds, empty beer cans and similar objects.

You are not alone. I don't even have a .22 rifle.

I have no interest right now in carrying a .22 for self defense, but I can see how, for some people, it may be the best option.

I have a Bersa Thunder .22 that I've carried many times while hunting or just out in the woods or maybe on a road trip. I have 8 or 9 larger and smaller defensive handguns but I really do like the Bersa.

I've carried this millions. Mostly in the woods. There are bad guys in the woods (think meth heads and drunks). I've shot frogs, squirrels, and rabbits for dinner. I might carry it for SD as I age and no longer relish recoil.
It's an S&W 34 bought new around 1980. It wears more compact grips at the moment. It is accurate and reliable. It will bounce a can at 50 yards if you aim. I carry something else if I'm going to St. Louis.

My .22 pistols are used exclusively in training for working out flinches I develope with hot .44 magnum loads, and to teach beginners how to shoot without the added worry of recoil.

If you seriously can not stand the pain that .32 recoil would cause, only then would I consider a .22. Furthermore and perhaps the most important thing, I would never suggest using a rimfire cartridge in a semi auto firearm for self defense unless your ultimate goal is suicide. Rim fire malfunctions are easier to clear in a revolver, so if you must carry .22 for self defense, I'd suggest a quality revolver. .

My spring "woods walking kit" is my Savage 93G 22WMR on my shoulder and my Model 48 4" on my hip.

Still want to upgrade my 22WMR rifle to a CZ.

I don't raft any more, but my son does, so he inherited my NAA 22 mag.
First two are snake shot, then 3 solids.

My CZ 452FS/Mannlicher in .22mag is a favorite walking in Penn's woods rifle.
With a little Leupold 1-4x20 scope it will get me groups as small as .9 at 100yd off the bench..... thou 1.25" are more typical .

.22mag is not a target round.

Not for self defense, But in the woods I sometimes carry two or three revolvers, one or those could be my 17-2, 34-1 or 422-1 along with something 38 or 45.

In warm weather a "shooting shirt" would be a BDU blouse with various holsters around the waist and a pocket or two full of ammo! On those days, it is targets of opportunity! When with my own personal SWMBO, usually more strolling than shooting, without her the reverse!

I carry a Beretta .25 Jetfire. Smaller than my Ruger SR22 so a better choice for concealed carry.

No, I would never consider a .22 for self defense unless I had nothing else available and that is also true for .25 and .32 caliber handguns, especially the little tiny mouse guns. .22 rimfire are generally not reliable and have killing power but not stopping power! If it is the only caliber that someone can handle for whatever reason, it is better than not carrying anything at all.

When my son was in Scouts, I carried this on every outing my son’s troop took. I now usually have a Seecamp .32 on me.

I carry a LCP 22 as a bug in my bibs front chest pocket with a Glock 43 in my front right pocket. The 22 is easy to get to when I am sitting down in a car.

I carry a Sig P 229, a .357 Sig, wherever I go. For jaunts to the Twin Cities and for church I add something else. Typically a revolver. Being too old to fight OR run I don’t concern myself with recoil or size and weight of my weapons. When I get too old to carry what I need I’ll make another plan.

Army generals tend to go around with a Navy Seal. In my case I have nine grandchildren, all adults. Two of my grandsons are serving soldiers; the women are as well armed and share my views. Their spouses are more or less the same. The point is someone will give Papa a hand but a .22 won’t figure in the equation.

Regards, Porkie

I have some .22 shooters but never carry them for self defense. .380 pocket carry in August is as low as I’ve ever gone on caliber.

For me, my 7yd "small and lite" needs are fulfilled by a S&W 337PD .38 or my old Colt Mustang Pocketlite in .380......... don't think a .22 will save me any weight or size.

woods walking looking for shed antlers I will carry a Ruger Mark II. Would not carry one for self defense, but on second thought that's why I carry it.

I do not, however I do agree with the saying "The .22 in your pocket beats the 45 you left at home".

If a .22 is all you can carry for reasons of hand strength, conceal-ability, recoil sensitivity, etc. I'd rather you BE carrying something than nothing at all. I personally know one story from my Dad's LEO career where his friend walked away with his life because of the Walther TPH in his breast coat pocket. The guy who put the knife to his throat cannot say the same.

Yeah I get super consistent groups, "groups" being the operative word. I wouldn't call it a laser, haha. Good enough for sub 100yds fun and small game hunting.

22WMR is one of my personal favorites!

Smallest thing I ever carry for SD is a Bauer .25acp, and only as a BUG.
Not to say I wouldn't carry a 22 in the same size in the same role.
I just don't have one.
I've looked hard at some of the little Star/Colt Jr. 22LRs, though they are a little bigger than the Bauer.
I just haven't found one as small as the Bauer in 22LR yet.
In fact, I haven't found anything other than a couple of 22 short designs that is as small as the Baby Browning/Bauer patterned guns.
About the littlest thing you can hold in your hand that will go BANG 5 or 6 times without a reload. Even the NAA revolvers are bigger.
And they are WAY faster to reload than the NAA too.
Never have figured out why nobody made them in 22LR though. If they did I'd have one.

I carry in my waistband a KEL-TEC PMR 30.
22 magnum, 30 round magazine plus one in the chamber. Also carry another full magazine in my pocket!
This is real firepower folks, and the weight is negligible.
Also negligible recoil and easy to fire rapidly!

The ones in the pictures are all .22's and actually all the same model.

OK, I gotta ask. What are those?

The M-650 .22 MRF is a nice jacket pocket gun that you can shoot from your jacket pocket.... that is if you have to.

I just came back from the range with mine and shot 50 rounds of
ARMSCOR 40 grain jacketed hollow points from 20 feet.

Even though it has fixed sights they are right on.

When the need arises it's in my jacket pocket.

Default Catch 22

Carry every time I go to the Farm or Visit Wyoming.

Confident with it, anything within 100yards will get
hurt (point of impact out to 100yrds a must with all
my Revolvers), Hollow Points bullets are bad News.

Safe, all self contained, straight forward usage, easy
to use, easy to Load/Reload, Single or Double Action
choice is excellent, no guessing/worry if cartridge in
the Chamber, just draw & shoot, box of 50 22lr
cartridges next to nothing to carry.

This goes for all my Revolvers; Big Bore and Small Bore.

I use to have a NAA 22 magnum. After going back 3 times for repair, I don't trust any .22 for a CC. self defense...

Is that a Walther? If you want to go that route, get an Iver Johnson TP22.
2/3 the size and half the weight firing the same round.

My "house gun" which I carry in the vest pocket of a fleece jacket is a Seecamp LWS-32. (I have vintage Silvertips with real aluminum jackets in it, too.) EDC is minimum .38 special. Sometimes 9mm or .45ACP.

Having had to kill a possum with a .22 (Ruger 10/22), which took a while and a lot of rounds, I would not use a .22 for self defense unless it was all I had.

Personal opinion, your mileage may vary.

Only around the house. S&W 617-4 8 3/8"bbl 10shot loaded with Stingers soon to be replaced by an Apex Tactical S&W 625-8 4".45ACP with "Moon Clips" loaded with Federal +P HST HPs. I Just sold my .44 Magnum today that was back-up to my .22LR. It had speed loaders with 210 grain Winchester Silver Tips.

S&W 617-4 8 3/8"bbl 10shot .22LR- it is built on the K-frame and shoots like a dream.

If you are going to carry a .22 LR you need to intimately know human anatomy and where to shoot. I am not going to go into it here as there are plenty of sources of that knowledge available if you really want to know it. It is good knowledge for anyone armed with a handgun to memorize.

I used a .22 for self defense because that is what I had with me.
The .44 in the safe was no help at all.

I used a Beretta 21-A for a few years when I needed something small. A .32 wasn't enough to make me change back in those days. When Kel-Tec brought out the .380, I made the switch. Hard to justify a heavier, wider .22 at that point.

Like I said in the past I have a 351C that Teddy Jacobson from actions by T smooth out the action because it was terrible. Also have a NAA in 22 mag I sometimes carry in my pocket when walking around my neighborhood on hot days when just wearing shorts.

For seld defense NO, Sometimes camping and small game hunting. Running around in the ATV with a J or K 22 might result in a rabbit supper.
