Default 629 Classic Rear Sight

Several months ago I purchased a used 629 Classic with optics mounted on it.
I have wanted to remove them and install the factory rear sight back on it.
Sadly the rear sight was not with the 629 and the shop I bought it from told me it didn't come with the sight.
I've been looking at numerous places for a S&W adjustable type rear sight to put back on it. Every place I have looked at all show Out of Stock or Unavailable.
Would anyone know where I could locate the rear sight?
I had also considered putting the L.P.A. sights on it.
Any thoughts on them or other brands of replacement sights?
Thanks in Advance,
Jeff

The LPA sight is the best one out there, but expensive. The factory sight is actually a very good option. I don't know who has them right now, but it should be the newer style that fits all the current guns. Might check the For Sale ads in the S&W Forums.

Welcome to the Forum

I have the LPA fiber sights on one of my 627s

I think they are great for fast target acquisition and they don't look bad either

As to a original rear sight, where did you look?

I just checked a few of the online parts vendors and everyone has them in stock.

They are in stock at Brownells
They are in stock at Midway
They are in stock at Midwest Gun Works
They are in stock at Numrich

I did not check Smith & Wesson's inventory, but odds are they have them as well

It depends on which rear sight was on your 629. The older square tang sight or the current sight with the round tang and the factory drilled & tapped top strap.

If the former, your only resource is the secondary market like eBay or Numrich. Not all square tang sights are the same. You need to know the critical dimension shown in the picture below, and purchase the appropriate sight.

The LPA sights are made to install on the current factory D&T'd frames. If yours is not factory, it will depend on the spacing of the holes added to mount the optic - not likely to be the same as factory. One option you would have is a Bowen Rough Country rear sight. He makes one with the old-style square tang that is not drilled, so it can be drilled to match what you have.

OTOH, Bowen's are also available for the new style rear sight which will use the existing holes. For my money, the Bowen sight is far superior to the LPA and I have and have used both. In my area the cost is about the same. Of course, with the round-tang sight, they are still available from S&W (even if they are temporarily out). If it were my gun, I'd opt for the Bowen in either case. Sometimes hard to find - I think he sells them primarily to gunsmiths. That's where I got mine.

Good luck.

Adios,

Pizza Bob

Welcome to the forum,
First determine which dash revision your 629 is, as others have stated the 629, 629-1 and 629-2 use the first style which is shared with the Model 29-2 and 29-3,
The 629-3 rear site has a round front but the screw spacing is unique to that revision only.
The 629-4 and up share the current style being used which should be available from SW.

It’s a 629-6.
I did get through to S&W the other day and have the correct rear sight for my model.
Thank you for the various suggestions.
Jeff
