Default S&W 65-5 Lady Smith

I have a 65-5 that seems to be a bit different. It is hammerless, the 3" barrel is ported and it has this "W" marking which is TM protected. Does anyone have any insight on this one?

My guess is it's all custom work. And the "W" is the mark of the shop or Smith who did it.

I think that the "W" may be the trademark of Weigand Gunsmithing, a highly regarded gunsmith.

LOL! Yup, thanks Terry! It does have a hammer, just no spur.

Anyone have any thoughts on value? I am looking at buying it and they are asking $750. It is in really good condition, I just can't find anything like it and standard 65-5 seem to be going in the $600 range in this condition.

So your're basically getting hundreds of dollars worth of work for an extra $150? Sounds like a deal to me. And you don't even have to wait months for the work to be completed.

If the work appears well done, the condition high, and the configuration suits your needs, I'd buy that thing fast.

Stock LS 65s sell for a comparable amount and more regularly...

I paid $750 for my stock one, I’d say that’s about average. I’m not sure about the work done to it, I wouldn’t place additional value on it though.

I wouldn't place any value on the custom work unless you like it.
To me the porting and de-horn are negatives, especially the porting.

I'm not much on porting. It's going to spit or at least that's been my experience. The real question is do you like it and are you going to keep it forever...the market for that one will be smaller than for a regular 65 if you ever sell it. I would wager that over half of revolver lovers would rather not have the work.

You're the only one that has to be happy. Let us know what you decide.

I'm not big on porting or spurless, and would never send one out for the work. I'd try to get it for $700, but would pay the $750 and not look back. Now what we really need is a side view pic, because if it's the LS with the shrouded ejector rod - that is the money shot.

The "W" trademark is indeed Jack Weigand's...

And $750 is a very good price. I paid more than that for my 65-5 LS that was done by Mike LaRocca, formerly the head gunsmith at Pachmayr.

As others have said, if the modifications are to your liking, read that: Something you would have paid to have done, then jump on it.

Adios,

Pizza Bob

Default Weigand

Definitely custom by Jack Weigand, and the porting is definitely EDM'd by Magna-Port (note trapezoidal ports). Nice gun.

For value, my opinion is that any collectible value is destroyed and now its value is based on however much someone would place on that exact custom work for a shooter. It really depends on finding the right buyer who is looking for that. It's definitely less than the value of an unaltered gun, which would probably command the highest value.

That’s a Weigand gun. Recognize that artistry anyway. Never part with it Sir

To be contrary, I love porting and even had my G43 ported by Magna-port. It shoots like a .380 now. So easy to keep on target! It barks some, but the whole flame thing blinding you at night is internet lore me thinks. I’ve shot mine at night - no problems.

Been watching the pricing of the 65 LS for a while now both on the net and in area shows. Asking price seems to have hit highs in the $ 1,000-1,200 with lows in the $ 750-850 range.
Obviously more completed sales in lower range.

Double obvious!!!! This is a gun S&W should have put into the regular production lineup. A near perfect carry gun.

Just one old country guys opinion. Worth exactly what it cost you.

And why I scooped-up this one from a local pawn shop for $550 last month.

I'm not a "collector". I'm just an accumulator. I buy guns I want to shoot and or carry. I'm currently spent out on guns at the moment, otherwise I'd be asking you where it is so I could buy it if you don't want it. It looks like a very nice carry gun. I have one of the 3" ported 629s. I have had no issues with it being ported and have considered having my 69 also ported. That revolver looks like the perfect gunman's gun unless of course you're a semi-auto guy.

Buy it. Shoot it. Carry it. A 3" K-frame with the spur removed is an ideal carry revolver.
