Congratulations on the pursuit and purchase of a 5"Bbl
S&W 629-3.

What a coincidence; yesterday I pulled my Circa 1993
629-3 6-1/2" from the back of the closet to look at it.

Mine has the Serial Number above the Model Number on
the Yoke Relief.

I really like the 5"Bbl models. Someday I'll get one.
Hopefully a 45Colt one.

As usual my no pretty picture from this guy.

Very nice looking .44! I like the full-lug barrel in this length. Really makes the gun much more pleasant to fire. Congrats on your new revolver.

Piling up the 629s!! I love it. I was glad to see you found a replacement 4"er too. My dash 3 Classic has a THA serial number prefix and is in the top strap too. Did you get the box, tools, etc?

Yours was one of the guns I was talking about. I only got the gun. There must be some reason they did the odd prefixes. Thanks for posting yours again. I got to hit the like button again.

Here's the feedback I got from Mr. Jinks about the odd serial numbers, "the guy who set-up the serial stamping die did not check to see what serial number he should use and just stamp where the last group was. All the company cares is that each gun has an unique serial number."

Turns out my gun originally had a 6.5 inch barrel. It appears that it went back to the factory for the barrel swap. No matter, I'm happy.

BTW, mine has a ship date of Sept 19, 2000.

Nice catch, Shark Bait! Those -3 guns are nice. I have the 6 1/2" version myself, serial starts with BPM and shipped 6-23-93. BTW, you really need to get rid of the Goodyears and put some pretty wood on that sweetheart. A nice set of Culinas would fit the bill. And with the Culina stocks, it's as comfortable as with the rubber grips to shoot for me at least. Here's mine for an example:

Very nice MudDoc! I do like the look of wood, but I also appreciate the Hogues with medallions. They are right for the gun and are not easily found. You have a very nice looking 629 there.

I held onto my stock medallion Hogues too; they are in the box with the original docs and tools. But those guns look so good with some proper wood on them too. I admit that I am spoiled to John's stocks, as they fit my hand just right. I also have a 29-6 Classic in a 5" barrel and it's a pure pleasure to shoot also.

Love John's grips, have them on most of my collection of K and N frames. Wish he made them for round and square J frames. Here's a picture of a couple of mine.

I understand. I like stainless for field use, but would like to have a 5 inch 29 Classic one day.

Mine is a 629-4 Classic 5" barrel, my backpacking gun.

Nice one Mehutch! That is one hunk of a cylinder. Was it part of a special run?

To tell you all the truth, I saw the gun in 1997 at my local gun shop, new at $515. It had a three inch barrel and the unfluted cylinder. I did not care about the 3" barrel, I wanted the unfluted cylinder. So I bought it and sent to S&W. I wanted a 4" barrel, S&W said, "How about a 5 inch barrel?" I said sure, that would be better. It is well balanced, shoots spot on and I love the look. I still have the unfired 3" barrel. Would like to sell it, don't know what's its worth. So there you have it.

A 629-4 three inch unfluted would be a classic carry. Very desirable gun today.

It’s odd that your barrel has the red ramp though. Most 3 inch full underlug barrels have a black ramp. Also it looks like the barrel is cut for a full length ejector rod

Good question about the ejector rod. Likely S&W replaced the shorter rod to accommodate the new barrel length, very possible. The red ramp, well I don't know, it came like that. Thanks.

Awesome looking gun!! I would love to get the unfluted cylinder for my 629. And swap between the fluted, and unfluted if I wanted to. Just something for me to look into down the road.

Yours is a convert like mine. It appears my gun originally was a 6.5 inch gun and was converted to a 5 inch. This isn't an investment gun so it doesn't matter. We have what we wanted. All is good.

the -3 is a great one congrats. i looked for years till i found one. mine came from a man that moved down from alaska, was his bush gun. most important thing when i was looking was the endurance package thus dead set on -3 when i wanted one. this ones got a hair trigger for me its a plus and minus i usually like about 3.5 to 4lb on sa so i can hold it when in combat mode and not get a negligent discharge

Of course, a gun like this deserves some good quality leather. Here is a Bianchi Cyclone and a custom pancake by DM Bullard.

The SA trigger can't be too light for me ... just don't touch the trigger until you're ready to shoot. I normally use the minimum available rebound spring, which usually gives about a 2-1/2 to 2-3/4 trigger. When I carried my 10mm Kimber 1911, I had its trigger set to 2-1/4lb. For some reason, 2-3/4 lbs on my Model 69 feels LIGHTER than the 1911 trigger. My 629 has the next-stiffer rebound spring in it, because when the gun was new, the trigger wouldn't always return with the lightest rebound spring ... just some roughness in the works. So I think its trigger is about 3 lbs. It might work OK now with the lightest spring (because of all the live-firing and dry-firing I've given it has smoothed the works), but I haven't tried that, because the 3 lb trigger actually feels good enough.
