Default Corona pick up 29-3

Hello all, so in the midst of the massive virus scare some good things are occurring. Things like anti-gunners seeing a purpose for firearms. Another, people are trading old revolvers for new guns they want. Being the ďold soulĒ that I am, situations like this are good for me. I finally found a revolver Iíve been hunting for about the past 7 years. An 8 3/8 29-3 in about 85% condition. This gun is the replacement to the 29-5 DX I owned 7 years ago. If it wasnít for the full under lug Iíd still own it (too muzzle heavy). However, the moment Miss Piggy left the stables I began my search. As of 3-20-20 my search ended. Other than some standard holster wear sheís in great shape. I payed $1000 and Iím sure that might be a tad high. But, it wasnít to me.

Congratulations! Wonderful revolver and a fair price. The problem is that now we're all hungry for more photos . . .

Congratulations. As long as you're happy, that's all that matters. I finally picked up my 629-3 today, too.

I actually like the heavier weight of the full underlug on a 44 magnum. It tames the muzzle flip and I feel more comfortable shooting it.

I like the extra weight on the shorter lengths, but on the 8-3/8Ē I think thereís enough weight there already - for my tastes anyway.

Congrats to the OP on his new .44! ďLife is good!Ē

Nice score.

I noticed the old stuff I like is still sitting there, while all the new semi-autos are flying out the door.

Default Long Tom

Congratulations on your new purchase. Also Thank
You for the Pictures and Story.

I too am glad when Vintage S&Ws are traded in for New
Plastic Bottom Feeders.

That would be fun to Shoot and Reload for. Please give
Range Report when you shoot it.

That's great logic in these crazy days. I agree that with a long tom like yours the full lug just throws a tad too much weight out front. It looks like you found a nice one. I love getting mine out to work once in a while. Congrats.

I had a chance to get her out this morning. If I do my part, 1 gallon water jugs at 100 yards is no problem. Those hand filling stocks are perfect for my big hands.

I use Postimage.com. Transfer your pics on the pc to the site and click share and hotlink to forums. Or you can use the Tapatalk app on your phone. That makes big pics too.

Default To Infinity and Beyond

Wow! When I mentioned Range Report I did'nt
expect a 100yd Milk Jug Test.

Thanks for being a 100 yarder. Usually Shooters
are the 7-16yds, that's easy stuff.

My Ownership Rule #10 - know where my all my
Revolvers/Pistols (22lr-45Colt) hit at 100yds.

Fortunately our Indoor Range goes to 30yds/90ft.
So I shoot that a lot, while the Bottom Feeder shoot
mostly 7yds (that's way to easy and boring).

Out at the Farm my Range is out to 150yds.
I have a number of Target Stands in between.

I'm sure the BF 7yd'ers are wondering what the hell
I doing. Every once in a while one will ask me;
I say "If the Bad Guy is in that range their already to close".

Thanks again.

Check out the reloading section here on the forum. There are TONS of threads on loads for 44 mag.

The best advice I can give is to avoid a double charge of Titegroup.

Default My non punishing 44Mag Reload

My current Reload for the 44Rem Magnum is
a good plinking load and for Hunting:

240gr Lead Round Nose Flat Point or Lead Semi
Wad Cutter
5.6grs Alliant Red Dot, CCI LP #300 primer
Brass is Winchester, Remington, Federal, Starline.
Crimp is what I call medium roll crimp.
FPS approximately 825.
Bullets tumbled lubed with Ben's Liquid Lube,
for Lead free barrel performance.
Primers no where near flat.

I have and use Bullseye, Unique, American Select
and Power Pistol. I like all. I keep the reloads
around 800-850fps.

The Best to you and your Endeavors.

Be aware that this is amphibian memory from about 40 years ago, but I got a Model 29-2 about then, but with a 4” barrel. I decided I wanted to shoot handgun silhouette so I found an 8 3/8” barrel and had the late Fred Schmidt install it. I was getting good results by taking the old Keith bullet and dropping back on his powder charges to about 18.0 gr or so of 2400 (IIRC) but please check with other sources to be sure.

I agree with those who like the lighter weight of the lug-less barrel, especially when you have 8 3/8” of barrel length out there. IMHO any load you should be shooting in that gun will have its recoil sufficiently damped by that barrel, more weight just isn’t needed. Of course, YMMV!

Thanks everyone for replying. I have some bullseye and clays I can try. Just wasn’t sure what y’all would recommend. My current load does about 1200fps from that long barrel but it just isn’t necessary for plinking. Thanks again everyone, hopefully I’ll have more pictures soon.

I ended up with a M27 in a deal years ago in the wood case with all the accouterments but was 8 3/8 ...which.... to me... Looks like a Clown Gun that has a flag that swings out and says BANG like those 1950's Cartoons. Got rid of it.

You might also want to look up the recommended dose of Unique for use behind that Keith bullet I mentioned. You can get a load that is relatively pleasant to shoot while still retaining the authority of the 44 Mag.

Default Feet per Second

Hey! a note of Safety. Never thought of this until reading some
of the Posts.

I am unsure how much Feet per Second is needed to get a
Lead Bullet out of that Long Barrel.

Lead is slipper than Jacket bullets, but I don't know exactly
what speed is needed.

Please, when testing what ever Reload you use make sure the
Bullet reaches the Target.

Just thought I'd bring that up, I shoot Revolvers 4"-6-1/2" barrels.

This hobby is all about tracking, getting, maintaining and enjoying what you like. I hope that it is also a great, cared for family heirloom after you have enjoyed it many years.

That load approximates what I use in my .44s (19.0 grs 2400, with slightly heavier bullets). I canít imagine it will harm your 29-3. You might find you need to use at least .431Ē bullets, or larger, to avoid leading in the older guns with large diameter exit bores.

If you are looking for a .44 Special-velocity plinking load, Elmer Keith used to recommend 8.5 grs of Unique. Over the years Iíve tried many different charges and powders. Iíve never found anything that was a real standout. Iíd stay with the medium burn-rate powders and away from the really quick ones like Bullseye, AA2, Titegroup, etc., and Iíd pay particular attention to getting a good, firm, uniform crimp to help with consistent ignition of the small charges in the big case.

Actually, Iíve considered doing that once my 4227 is gone. Iím only looking for 1000-1100 FPS out of this long barrel. All Iíll need for deer season.

It was an 8 3/8 29-5, itís not that it wasnít a good gun. The balance with the round butt and full lug didnít feel comfortable. However, this one with the square butt full stocks feels and balances perfectly for me.

Made a deal today for a like new 629, 8 3/8". Had to pay a bit more than Jamblen86 but I just couldn't pass it up.

Words of wisdom and unfortunately experience. Have you found a new one yet?

I love the long barrel 29s!

Here’s my 29-2 and 29-6. Also have a 29-4 classic hunter

Not yet, the store has to hold it for X number of days before we can even start the paperwork. I may slip by while I'm out paying a few bills today and get a picture or two. Also, noticed my error, it's
8-3/8" not 5/8.

Congrat's on your 29.
I have the exact same one that I picked up used back in the 80's.
It was my first handgun and I still love it and shoot it.
I'm sure you'll have a blast shooting it.
