You guys are completely Clueless, that is an extremely limited production performance center, and exceptionally hard to find these days.
You did very well on the price OP, congrats on the rare Find!!

Just because of the scarcity and high price, I made 2 646es out of 686es, one 4" and one 6". The 4" one is my IDPA gun and one of my favorite ones to shoot.

Are there THREE different versions of the 646?
I had been under the impression that there were 400 examples of the PC version and 300 examples of the non-PC one.
Is there a third that was made to only 161 units?

Yikes! 1650? I am soooo out of touch with today's models and pricing... Great that you found that one - and in LNIB condition! Congratulations on your new revolver.

The has what clips it came with still has plastic on case. It was bought new sat in guys collection until he died family just pawned it off. I bet you would be very hard pressed to find another 646 in new unfired condition let alone a performance shop one. $1650 for a super rare pistol is not bad. It was not a steal but not bad. I have learned you will kick yourself if you don't buy something you wished you had when you had the chance. Next time around it will be higher if there is a next time around. I know couple S&W collectors that would take it in a second at $2000 just to have it. Didn’t buy it to sell bought because I had never seen one. This pistol has never been loaded outside factory.

Another good find. I got a chief special pre mod 36 unfired in box with paper work cleaning rod from old lady. She bought it new never shot it. It does have a faint ring around cylinder from being loaded and unloaded for 50 years. But never fired paid $300 for it. I offered her $750 but she said no it think she said she paid like $35-40 for it new.

I just bought a 646 4" slab side Performance Center. Seems they also made a conventional barrel and one other standard. I posted this on a old forum because there is not much info on the metal case unfired or fired PC 646. I paid $1500 on gunbroker plus the dreaded tax and fees. I'm Ok with that.
If anyone else has one would love to here about it. From what I have heard there was between 121 (mine) and 161 made. S&W catalog is not very informative. Thanks!
