Default 657-0 4" Barrel.

I got one of these from a fellow S&W Forum/S&WCA member a few months ago. I had a 4" Mountain Gun at one time but I just never had a good feeling about it. I ran into the 657-0 at a show in Louisiana. I loved it. Stamped markings, hammer mounted firing pin, no MIM stuff. Just a good solid magnum. The problem I had was I was out of state, even though I carry copies of my friend's FFL so I can ship stuff like this to him, and....I didn't bring enough money. The 657 was reasonably priced and I'm very surprised it didn't sell at the show. I got the info I needed and bought it the following Monday and had it shipped to my FFL. I was told by the seller, whom I have met before, that the 657 was previously owned by a very famous entertainer. That's cool, and I believe the seller was truthful. I bought the gun not the story behind it. The previous owner is a private type person and I'm not going to mention his name. Not going to mention the sellers name either but he's on this forum some and if he wants to talk about it he can. BOTTOM LINE: the 657 has a AUY serial prefix, indicating a 1987 ship date according to the SCSW. The 4" was discontinued in 1988 so they only made the 4" from 86-88. My question is 1-How many did they make in 4" and 2-What is the approximate value. Just curious, NFS.

Don't know how many were made but I see more of the 3" 1986 Stocking Dealer Special than I do the 4" guns of which they made 5500+-....

I also have one and just brought it on a 5600 mile cross country trip...a gun S&W should still be making....

Value (without the story), w/o box or paperwork with original grips, $950-1200. LNIB, $1250-1600 is what I have been seeing them sell for.

Did all these 4 inch 657s come with square butt combats?

I have had my 4" 657 for close to two decades now

No, Square Butt Combats were not the the grip that shipped on the revolvers.

However, many of us have changed out the grips to something we like better than the Factory Targets

I believe they came with speed loader cut target grips, mine had Pachs on it so I put these after market combats on, they look and feel much better.

The 4" 657 was what started my descent into 41 Mag madness.

I traded it for a suburban thinking that I had gotten the better part of the deal, but was quickly proven wrong. It took almost 20 years to find another 657 4", and I dang sure won't be selling it any time soon.

Thanks for the replies. I think the 3" is easier to find. I've had several of those and still have one. I have been looking for a 4" for a very long time and this is the only one I have ever seen for sale and I've only seen one other that wasn't for sale. Several years ago I ran into a guy at a show who was selling 3" and 8 3/8" 657's. He want $1,000 for both of them. I talked him into sell me the 3" for $500 and immediately regretted not getting both of them. I ran him down a few minutes later to buy the 8 3/8" and of course he had just sold it.

Question: Are these 657s really stamped 657-0 on the frame? I have a 627-0 and I thought this model was the only one stamped with a -0. I have been wrong before though.

Both of mine are just 657

The Mountain Gun is 657-4

There have been a few -0 stamped models

However it is not uncommon for folks to mistakenly refer to a firearm as a ??-0 when they are really trying to express that it is a original ????, a NO Dash

In this case the proper designation would be a 657

That is interesting about them coming with Combat Grips... I've seen a bunch of them over the years and these are the first ones I can remember having seen Combats on....I bought mine used so long ago I have no clue what was on it....

...also what is odd is that the 3" 657s always bring more money than the 4"...
